Hernandez Mission

We will nurture and challenge all students, empower diverse thinking, facilitate the collaborative exchange of ideas, and encourage authentic engagement in the classroom, community, and global society.

Hernandez Vision

It is the vision of HeMS to work collaboratively with parents, teachers, and the community to guide students to be their own HERO by exhibiting Honesty, Excellence, Respect, and Ownership in every situation, every day.

Message from Dr. Ephlin, Principal

This past week students in the Discovery classes worked on stop motion films. Stop motion is an animated film making technique in which objects are physically manipulated in small increments between individually photographed frames so that they will appear to exhibit independent motion when the series of frames is played back as a fast sequence. These films take an enormous amount of time and attention to detail. Way to go students!

Hernandez Heroes

Hernandez HEROes are honest, demonstrate excellence, show respect, and take ownership every day in every situation.

  • 1 dose meningococcal vaccine (MCV4)

Your 6th grade student will have an opportunity to receive Tdap and/or MCV4 immunization(s) at school during the school day on Monday, April 1, 2019, with no cost to parents if he/she has not yet received these vaccines. This in-school immunization clinic is being sponsored by Healthy Schools. If you are interested in having your student receive his/her immunizations on the above stated day at school, please print the attached consent form(s) and return the completed form(s) to the school nurse no later than March 27, 2019. Note that each vaccine requires a separate consent form. Sixth grade students will be unable to receive these immunizations at school on the above date without properly completed and signed consent forms.

What is IB?

IB stands for International Baccalaureate. The IB is celebrating their 50th year in education and has over 4,000 schools worldwide. It began as a program to provide educational continuity for military and expat families that were moving around the world and wanted a rigorous academic program for their children that would remain constant regardless of the country.

The Primary Years Program (PYP) at the elementary level and the Middle Years Program (MYP) at the middle school level are both an overlay to the district and state aligned curriculum. Each one focuses on the development of the whole student with TEN Learner Profile Traits, and its goal is for students to gain a global perspective while fully participating in their local communities.

At the high school level with the IB Diploma Programme, students participate their junior and senior year with standard level (one year) and high level (two year) courses. Each of the IB courses are now given TWO credits each with AP classes given ONE credit each. The State of Texas only recently made this change Fall of 2018. IB students may earn college credit for courses taken - many universities are looking at whether students took advantage of the most rigorous programs that their schools had to offer - whether that is AP or IB.
