A Message from Principal Sarlos
Dear Palisades Families,
I hope you've all had a rejuvenating summer with your families!
I had the opportunity to chase my son around the Pacific Crest Trail this summer and it was inspiring. We traveled in our roughly outfitted ancient van to California and did some amazing hiking, some with our son, and mostly just the two of us. We also connected with friends from college. I hope that each of your families has had some equally relaxing time.
I am optimistic that this year will be the best we've had since the beginning of Covid and I'm excited to welcome some more joy into our school lives.
We have had more turnover over the summer. It is hard to see staff go, AND as educators we always want the best for each person; students and teachers. One of the things the pandemic has taught us is the importance of life balance and self care. In that vein, both Marta Soto and Olivia Hill will be leaving Palisades. Marta Soto got a part time teaching job closer to her home, and Olivia Hill has decided to take a year away from education.
The great news is that I have contracted two more amazing native spanish speaking educators to join our staff. As you know, Oseas Gonzalez (third grade), and Lippmann Coulibaly (fourth grade) joined our staff in June, as well as Rosa Pena (second grade). In addition, we have now extended contracts for new native spanish speaking teachers to take over our first-gand fifth-grade classes. They are experienced and delightful professionals. This is very exciting news! Finalizing their contracts will take a little while. Therefore, our current plan is Martha and Olivia will start their classrooms this fall and then the new teachers will take over as soon as they are able.
Please join me in welcoming new and former teachers to the 22-23 school year! We know this is not what you expected and we appreciate you supporting these transitions with flexibility and grace, and letting your children know that you trust us to bring them amazing new teachers. When the new teachers start we will have a meet and greet for them where parents will get a chance to meet them. We are sad to see Olivia and Marta go. On a bright side, we will now have staff members with heritage from so many countries: Mexico, El Salvador, Peru, Guatemala, Spain, and Brazil ! In addition, we have now hired staff to plan for the Chinese strand and to sub around the district.
Also, please welcome Wendy Olsen a Lake Oswego parent who is joining us as our new .5 counselor! Wendy worked at Oak Creek last year, and was a parent there when I was principal there. We are so looking forward to her joining our staff. Tracy Vitallero our previous counselor is also stepping away to focus on family this year and may come in as a sub. We will also have a new and a new .5 psychologist Valerie Dato On, and a new music and pe teacher Eri Noguiera. These two also speak spanish!

Set Up Meal Accounts, Applications
The universal free meals waiver with USDA expired on June 30, 2022. That means starting this school year LOSD will be serving meals under the free, reduced, and paid categories.
Please be sure to set up your student's meal account or apply for free/reduced meals. Look for Meals under Find it Fast on district and school website homepages for account setup and application information, and more.
Be Ready to Ride the Bus
Bus registration is not necessary. Access points -- or what most call bus stops -- will be available by mid-August. Look for an email from LOSD notifying you when access points are posted under Transportation on the district and school websites.
Help prepare your child to ride the bus. Select the access point(s) that work best for your family.
Visit your access point before school starts to familiarize your child with their stop.
Look for visual clues to help identify when it’s their time to get off the bus.
Kindergarteners need an adult to greet them off the bus. Bus drivers are obligated to return unattended kindergarteners to school for safekeeping. Please be sure to be at your child’s stop ahead of time to help keep the bus moving for all onboard.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Look Forward to Smart Start
Smart Start is an opportunity specifically for our students with 504s and IEPs, and their parents/guardians, to make introductions with their teachers and feel prepared for the start of school.
Smart Start will be held in person at each LOSD school, Thursday, Aug. 25, 2022, 1-3 p.m. Look for Smart Start on the district and school website homepages for more information.

2022-23 Verification
LOSD needs parents/guardians of all students enrolled for the 2022-23 school year to log into ParentVUE and review/update your students' information through the Register/Verify tab. This benefits both families and schools by:
• Ensuring that schools have accurate information to reach parents and other contacts in both emergency and non-emergency situations. Verification is important even if your address or contact information has not changed over the past year because the school may have incorrect information from a previous year.
• Confirming parent email addresses for Google Classroom and other applications to participate in your student's learning.
• Enabling distribution of key information in the district's K-12 Family Handbook.
If you have forgotten your ParentVUE password, go to the login page, click "I am a Parent," then click "Forgot Password." If you are unsure whether you have a ParentVUE account, please feel free to contact us. For assistance with the verification process, you may also refer to the user guide on the LOSD website.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Champions is Hiring
We are excited to have Champions Learning Program joining the Palisades family, partnering with us to operate their Before and After School Program in our school. The enrollment, thus far, is more than double what was anticipated, so Champions is still needing to hire SEVERAL more staff members to ensure all enrolled families can be supported.
They have added large Cash Commitment Bonuses for staff hired between now and the start of school. In addition, they will provide 2 weeks of free tuition to a Champions family, for any referral hired. They even are offering donations to the Charity of your choice if you refer someone who is hired on to the Champions Team.
If you, or someone you know, loves connecting with children, this is a great Part Time Job with Full Time Benefits. Think about who you would recommend and trust with your own children - they might be the perfect person interested in working a few hours a day.
For more details on the above incentives, or to apply or send a referral, please reach out to the Area Manager, Stephanie Scanlon at stephanie.scanlon@discoverchampions.com
