Monterey County Office of Education - Educational Resources
The next two articles are being shared on behalf of the Monterey County Office of Education. We thank them for all their work and for sharing vital information. Thank you also to Dr. Guss and her staff for their leadership in this challenging COVID-19 time.
Educational Services continues to provide virtual coaching and professional learning webinars to assist Monterey County Educators in the transition to distance learning. Please find a comprehensive collection of resources at this Distance Learning site. Content experts provide support focusing on the five key elements of quality distance learning programs:
1. Teacher-student connections
2. Learning structure and sequence
3. Content presentation
4. Engagement opportunities
5. Feedback opportunities
The California Association of School Counselors (CASC) has launched a COVID-19 website designed to provide guidance and easy access to online school counseling resources for school counselors, educators, caregivers and other school-based mental health professionals. It is designed primarily to assist school counselors and caregivers in order to help school-age children and youth during the coronavirus (covid-19) pandemic and maintaining continuity of education. https://covid19k12counseling.org/
The CDE has provided guidance on The California Healthy Youth Act – Mandated Sexual Health Education to help answer questions and address concerns districts are experiencing across the state. During the distance learning time period, districts and charter schools cannot skip the California Healthy Youth Act mandated instruction for middle school and high school despite the many challenges with delivering this sensitive education in a distance learning environment. Districts can postpone the sexual health education if they find it too difficult to implement comprehensive sexual health education in a safe and appropriate manner for students this year. Districts can elect to move the education to next year, for example, if they were providing the education to 7th graders and 9th graders, next year they can provide it to the 7th and 8th graders, as well as the 9th and 10th graders. CDE is advising that districts come up with a thoughtful plan for what that will look like, but it is permissible.
The Educational Services Division is working within a collective impact model with early educators throughout the county to provide support for emergency response efforts during this time. Find more information through the Monterey County Childcare Planning Council. As a part of this work, the Local Childcare Planning Council Executive Committee held a virtual Special LPC Meeting in order to update the community on necessary information related to childcare for essential workers. The CDE recently released Management Bulletin 20-07: COVID-19 Guidance to California Resource and Referral Programs and Local Planning Councils. The LPC Executive Committee met to discuss CDE directives and decided the LPC Council will serve as the point of communication in Monterey County as mandated by CDE in MB 20-07. Collaborative teams from multiple organizations continue to lead subcommittees implementing various projects to support childcare sites and early care needs. For additional information, or questions about guidance regarding emergency childcare services for essential workers and at-risk populations please contact Dr. Laurie Ramirez at laramirez@montereycoe.org.
