The Human Rights Commission is pleased to invite your students to participate in its 2018 Benjamin M. King Essay and J. Irwin Miller Art Contests. The contests have proven to be a successful way to introduce young people to the existence of our organization, raise awareness about human rights issues, and create an appreciation of our community's diversity. This year’s theme is “Fair Housing for All” in honor of the fiftieth anniversary of the passage of the Fair Housing Act.
The contest is open to Bartholomew County students in grades 5-12. Students can submit an essay, artwork, or a multimedia entry that addresses the contest’s theme of fair housing for all. Each entry must have an official entry form. Staple your entry form to the back of your essay or affix to the back of your art entry. Students should not write their name on their submissions.
One winner will be selected per division for the essay and art contests. The divisions are identified as follows: Division 1- Elementary: grades 5 and 6; Division 2 - Middle School: grades 7 and 8; Division 3 - High School: grades 9-12. Winners will receive a $75 award, an award-winning book, and complimentary tickets (for the student, his/her parents and his/her teacher) to the Commission's annual dinner, held in spring 2018, where the student will be recognized. The names of winning students and their teacher's names are traditionally published in The Republic and in the Commission's annual dinner program.
