This OSSB Classroom Features 'Guest Teachers' during October
One OSSB teacher this week said she told her students "...we are going to make the best of a tough situation (Covid-19) and if we can find something to laugh about, we should share it!" Those words came to life one day this week when Chewbacca showed up to teach Mrs. Ashley Traucht's virtual classes online!
Chewbacca made noises upon arriving to the Zoom meeting (the mask makes noise), and Mrs. Traucht's students "roared back their approval." When asked how students reacted to their new teacher, Mrs. Traucht explained that "it definitely encouraged participation!"
Students (and their teacher) are looking forward to the weeks leading up to Halloween. Mrs. Traucht said that "every week in October I plan to dress up as a different character, and that character will be the guest teacher for the day. Anything to bring a smile or a laugh to those who are struggling."
We are grateful for all that teachers and staff are doing to help brighten someone's day, and keep connections with our students and families strong! Panther Strong! ~ Mrs. Kaplan
OSSB Transition Focus Group
OSSB Parents and Guardians - do you ever find yourself thinking, "What's Next?"
- Has your child attended OSSB for a number of years?
- Are you wondering what his/her life may look like "beyond OSSB?"
- What career or college options are available?
- How they may live independently in the community?
- What kinds of recreational activities are available to my son/daughter?
Join this focus group led by OSSB Parent Mentor, Lauri Kaplan and Joanie Shell, BSVI Counselor. During this session, families will share ideas, and we will gauge parent interest in a variety of topics tailored to what you need to know when your child is blind or visually impaired, or "What's Next?"
Please RSVP for this virtual focus group in the link below, or by email to lkaplan@osdb.oh.gov by Sunday, October 18th.
Can't attend on October 27th? Don't worry, this focus group is designed to help plan meetings that will occur through the school year. Stay tuned for upcoming sessions!

Important Update from Superintendent Maynus
OSD and OSSB are committed to keeping our students safe, and attendance requirements will change based on numbers of COVID-19 in each county. If a student lives in a county that turns purple, the student will enter remote learning until the color coding changes back to red, orange or yellow.
If the student is in resident life and their county changes mid-week, the child will stay in the dorms until Thursday afternoon and then will remain at home (remote learning) until their home county color changes back to red, orange or yellow.

OSSB Alumni News - Get To Know Brendon Hamblin and his OSSB Inside and Out Podcast
Hello everyone, I’m 2016 OSSB Graduate, Brendon Hamblin. After graduating from OSSB, I attended (and graduated from) the Ohio Media School in Whitehall, where I studied Radio and Television broadcasting. I worked my dream job at WMRN Radio in Marion Ohio.
While working in the radio business, I came up with the idea for a podcast of “OSSB Inside and Out." I see it as kind of an extension of the OSSB podcast that Mr. Kelley and OSSB students put together each month!
"OSSB Inside and Out” explores the lives of students and staff and their experiences being and/or working with visually impaired persons. Each podcast features guests from the school's different departments. I have hosted former OSSB students Madison Kupsky, Jocee Janicki, Alex Schroeder and Macy McClain, and I have featured former and current OSSB Staff, such as Mr. Dan Kelley, Mrs. Carol Agler, Mr. Jim Peterfish and Mr. Phil Northrop.
If you’re interested in being on the podcast to share your experiences or memories, reach out to Brendon at ossb.inside.and.out.podcast@outlook.com. OSSB Inside and Out may also be found on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. ~ Brendon Hamblin
