Judaism
A religion of Jewish faith.
YHWH
In Hebrew the name of God is spelled YHWH. Since ancient Hebrew had no written vowels, it is uncertain how the name was pronounced originally. Eventually Hebrew developed written vowels. About the 13th century the term "Jehovah" appeared when Christian scholars took the consonants of "Yahweh" and pronounced it with vowels.
Star of David
The Star of David is known in Hebrew as the Shield of David. It is the symbol of Jewish identity and Judaism. It’s in the shape of a hexagram. You can draw one by combining two equilateral triangles. This has been in use as a symbol of Judaism since the 17th century.
Synagogue
The synagogue is the Jewish place of worship, but is also used as a place to study.
All synagogues contain a bimah, a table from which the Torah is read, and a desk for the prayer leader.
The ark in a synagogue is almost always positioned in such a way such that those who face it are facing towards Jerusalem.
Other features include a continually lit lamp, called the ner tamid, which represents "Eternal Light". It is used as a reminder of the western lamp of the menorah of the Temple in Jerusalem.
Jewish Celebrations
Rosh Hashanah is the Jewish New Year. According to tradition, Rosh Hashanah is the day of remembrance and the day of judgment.
Hanukkah is the Festival of Lights. It is an eight-day festival marked by the lighting of lights. One candle is lit on the first night, two on the second, and so on. A special candle holder is used. This is called a Chanukkiyah, or a Hanukkah menorah.
