Accessible Math
February 2019
CEC Council for Exceptional Children Conference
While many of you were home for a few super cold days earlier this month, I was enjoying equally frigid weather in Indianapolis. Bad news on finding the ever elusive perfect math curriculum resource for students who take the alternate assessment. We can still chat about matching student needs and teacher priorities to what is available, but there are really no new fantastic options on the market. This newsletter links to some HUGE resources rather than the small tips I usually try to share. Proceed with caution if you only have a few minutes to spare or bookmark this one to dig in when you really have some time.
Great news for math interventions and working with paraprofessionals. From NCII, the National Center for Intensive Interventions, we will be able to pilot a structured math intervention encompassing schema based instruction for word problems as well as a fluency component. I will be looking for a group of teachers, paras, and interventionists who are willing and able to follow a well researched protocol using 30 minute lessons over the course of a semester. Please use this form to indicate your interest in learning the details.
I am a huge fan of the Checklist Manifesto by Atul Gwande and believe that teachers could save time and reduce stress by creating a checklist of customized procedures and policies for your support staff and substitutes. I purchased a book from CASE, the special ed administrator group, and would love to facilitate the creation of some starter checklists in miPLACE with local teachers so that anyone could make a copy, add photos and details for their classroom and end up with their own customized version. Please use this form if you would like more information.
