WE KNOW HOW TO TALK, BUT HOW DO WE LISTEN?
Active Listening
- Make eye contact with your child by getting down to their level.
- Allow your child the freedom to speak without interruptions.
- Show your child you are listening to them through your body language by nodding your head, making appropriate facial expressions, and turning your body toward them.
- Reflect back what your child said to you, to make sure you understood what they said, and so they know they were heard.
- Let your child know that their feelings make sense.
EMPATHY
the ability to understand and share the feelings of another.
Research shows that children who learn the skills involved with empathy are more likely to:
- Build stronger relationships
- Resolve conflicts more effectively
- Exhibit positive behaviors
- Be more connected and compasionate
Practice at home
Notice and praise our child when they describe a problem from someone else's point of view. For example, your child might say, "There's a new student in our class. I noticed she didn't have anyone to play with at recess. I kind of felt bad for her." You can say, "I can tell you're really thinking about her point of view. It's nice to hear that you are trying to understand how she feels.
