Mrs. Walters' News
Both our kindergarten and first grade classrooms are rocking and rolling with our newly adopted Reading Workshop model! I've mentioned it before, but the stamina that is being built in reading is astounding. We have 6 and 7 year olds reading for 20 minutes straight! You can help partner with us by asking specific questions about what they are reading during the day. Instead of asking "What did you do today at school?," you could try to asking things like...
- "What kind of characters are in your book? Are they people or animals? What kind?"
- "What happened in the beginning, middle and end of your book?"
- "What is the setting or where does it take place?"
- "What is your favorite part?"
Conferences are next week- Tuesday and Thursday evening. This is an important time for you to discuss your child's progress so far this year. Our teachers have been preparing data and information to share with you about literacy and math progress, as well as citizenship and our Bear Necessities. We hope you will make every effort to attend your appointment and enjoy hearing about all the wonderful things your child is learning this year!
Our grade level teams met yesterday to go over our initial Acadience and MAP data. We have much to celebrate! Our first grade Acadience scores (which measure early literacy skills) were the highest in the district! Our kindergarten scores were lower than expected initially, however most students who are receiving intervention in literacy are already at benchmark! I cannot wait to see what our December data will reveal.
A small weather reminder- It is often chilly in the mornings and a little warmer in the afternoon. Please dress your children in layers so they are prepared for any weather Michigan will throw at us this time of year!
A drop off reminder: please do not park your car along the curb in the morning. The line of cars needs to keep moving along in an efficient way. Also, please drive slowly and carefully through the parking lot. Many children are walking in this area and we certainly don't want anyone to be injured.
Have a fun fall weekend everyone!
