Social-Emotional Learning Update!

Our Goal this year:

100% of students will have an adult at school they can count on

Where we are: 86%

Why?

-Relationships are at the heart of building community and learning. There is substantial research to support the impact of relationships on social-emotional wellbeing and academic achievement.

-When students don’t feel a sense of belonging to their school, it makes it very difficult to learn.

How are we measuring this?

-Students recently completed a survey assessing 3 domains: Supportive Relationships, Challenging Feelings, and Emotional Regulation

How are we supporting this goal?

-Supportive Relationships: Emphasis on building relationships for students who scored low in this area.

- Professional Development has been focused on relationship-building.

-Emotional Regulation and Challenging Feelings: Embedding skills into classroom lessons and activities such as accurately labeling emotions and staying calm during times of stress.

What you can do at home:

-Model labeling emotions and verbalizing coping strategies: Ex. as adults, when frustrated, say- “I’m frustrated because this is hard, I’m going to take a few deep breaths.” or “I’m going to ask for help”

-Have conversations about what students can do when angry, sad, frustrated, etc.

Will I see my child’s survey results?

Since we are taking a whole-school approach to the above areas, individual student survey results will not be shared unless your child is recommended for an explicit intervention following a lack of successful classroom supports. If you have questions regarding this information particular to your child, please contact your divisional counselor.

A Reminder From Our School Nurses

As more age groups have the opportunity to receive COVID vaccines, we ask everyone to remain vigilant in hand washing and proper mask wearing during the school day to reduce the spread of all seasonal illnesses, including influenza and COVID. The change in weather and upcoming holidays will lead to more time indoors with family gatherings and celebrations, which we want our AGCS families to enjoy in good health! As always, please contact your school nurses regarding COVID exposure or cases within your household for guidance.

Parent Family Engagement Series

At AGCS, we strive to build genuine relationships with our students and their families. Relationships with families support overall family well-being and children's healthy development. When families are engaged, partnerships are created that have a common focus – helping children grow and thrive.

We realize that the current social distancing requirements can be stressful, at best. The global pandemic requires us to re-think how we do even the most normal, everyday tasks and how we navigate it all safely with our children.

To help support our rock star parents through this time, we're offering a free series of Parent Family Engagement Workshops on a variety of topics. We look forward to your joining us!
