Keeping Children Home When They Don't Feel Well
Should I keep my child home or send him or her to school?
Please keep your child home if he or she has had any of the following in the past 24 hours:
- fever of 100.4 degrees or higher
- vomiting
- diarrhea more than one time
- Excessive tiredness or lack of appetite
- Productive coughing, sneezing
- Headache, body aches, earache
- Sore throat
A minor sore throat is usually not a problem, but a severe sore throat could be strep throat even if there is no fever. Other symptoms of strep throat include headache and stomach upset. Contact your pediatrician for a test to determine if it is strep throat.
Keep your child home until his or her fever has been gone for 24 hours without medication. Colds can be contagious for at least 48 hours. Returning to school too soon may slow recovery and expose others unnecessarily.
MCPS 7.2017 Adapted from “NASN Guidelines For Keeping A Sick Child At Home”
Student Pick-Up @ End of Day & Walkers
If, for any reason, your child is NOT riding the bus home (either a car rider or walker) please make note of the following important information:
- Students cannot be picked up in the main lobby after 3:20pm.
- If you are picking them up at 3:20 or later, you will need to go through either the car rider line or meet them at the exit on the Watson Ave side of the school where our walkers are dismissed.
Following these guidelines helps us maintain student safety and building security.
With Virginia Tech back in session this is a friendly reminder to be careful and aware if you walk your children to and/or from school and to be sure to use the crosswalks on Tom's Creek and Watson Ave.
News from the GLE Cafeteria
Some parents have been misinformed by their student that students cannot eat lunch unless they have money on their account. This is not correct. We absolutely will feed them a reimbursable meal of 3 -5 components and charge their account as needed. That is what we are doing in the lunch lines, making reimbursable meals readily available.
What we cannot do is sell ala carte (which is chips, drinks, ice cream, even milk) if they have no money in hand or pre-loaded into their account. We cannot charge a la carte.
The best thing a parent can do is pre-load money into myschoolbucks accounts for their kiddos.
