Atticus chooses not only to defend Tom, but also to treat the Ewells with respect in the court even though they were not respecting him.

In this part of the book Atticus is being brave by standing up for Tom Robinson and not letting the gang get by so that they can kill Tom.

Atticus tricked Mr. Ewell into writing his name to show that he was left handed that leaded to Mayellas black eye on her right side. Atticus was very smart to think of this which became one of the turning points in the trial.

He got a lot of respect from the county which got him power from being the best marksman in Maycomb.

Atticus is standing up for what's right even when the majority doesn't believe it is true.

This shows that Atticus doesn't do very much, he doesn't do the fun things that most dads do and he is very serious.
