Heating Equipment Safety
Heating equipment includes furnaces, fireplaces, wood stoves, and space heaters. Never use a stove or oven to heat your home!
- Make sure all heating equipment is properly maintained and in good working condition.
- Do not store combustible materials or flammable liquids near any heat source. A minimum of 3 feet clearance is necessary around the entire heating source.
- Use a glass or mesh screen in front of fireplaces to keep hot embers in place.
- Have your chimney cleaned as often as necessary to keep creosote from building up on the sides.
- Use only UL-approved space heaters that have "tip over" switches.
- Never use kerosene heaters in unventilated spaces or when people are sleeping.
- Never plug an electric heater into an extension cord or power strip.
If you cannot afford a smoke alarm or you are in need of a free "Safe Home Check" call 712-279-6314 to schedule an appointment.
