Jensen Jaguar Families!

I hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving break. December is here and this month is going to go by very quickly!

5th Grade Families, this is the last call to get your child's California Healthy Kids Survey positive permission slips in. We are asking for your positive permission for your 5th grader to take part in this survey that takes place every two years and the results impact our site and district-level goals and ultimately program funding. We are also asking all parents/guardians to complete the parent survey. Your input and family participation is greatly appreciated. If you have a student at more than one school, you can complete a survey for each school. The link below is specifically for Jensen Ranch families all grades K-5.

Click Here for CHKS for Parents/Guardians

All Kindergarten, 2nd and 5th-grade students will participate in Hearing Screening this Wed., 12/11. This allows us to check the hearing of our students on a semi-annual basis. Teachers may also recommend students to participate in the hearing screening to ensure there are not hearing concerns. If there are any notable hearing concerns for your child, the district nurse will send you a letter.

Please review the health information below from the school district and Alameda County services about when to keep your child home and attendance. Here are a few rules to go by:

  • Fever of 100 degrees or higher? Your child is to be fever-free for 24 hours before returning to school.
  • Vomitting/Diarreaha? Keep your child at home until your child is symptom-free for 24 hours.
  • Severe Cough/Difficulty Breathing? Keep your child home, contact your physician. Student can return to school when symptoms are under control.

Please take a look through the Round-Up to ensure you are aware of all the upcoming activities and events at Jensen this month and in our community. Jensen's Adopt a Family for Castro Valley Community Outreach will end this week. Please see the PTA section for more information.

If you happen to be at the district office during December, keep an eye out for our Jensen students' art on display!

5th Grade Families-California Healthy Kids Survey

Dear 5th Grade Families,

We are requesting permission for your child to be a part of our school’s California Healthy Kids Survey sponsored by the California Department of Education. This important survey will help provide data to improve the school learning environment, academic achievement, and the health and wellbeing of our youth It includes questions on the supports provided to children; school connectedness, climate, and safety; and risk factors such as violence and substance use.

Student participation is voluntary and anonymous. Your child does not have to take the survey. No names or any other identifying information is connected to the answers except for the name of the school.

Student participation requires that you grant your permission in writing by returning the permission form (attached below). A hard copy of the permission form will also come home with your child's report card. We hope you will encourage participation so that your child’s opinion and knowledge can be part of the information gleaned from the survey.

Your positive permission slip is due back to the school no later than Tues., Dec. 3rd. The California Healthy Kids Survey will take place in your child's class during the week of December 9th.

If you have any questions, please contact me directly.

If you wish to view the survey, you may do so at the school office or on-line www.cv.k12.ca.us.

Regards,

Ms. MacLean

Public Charge Rule

On August 14, 2019, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security amended federal regulations known as the public charge rule. The changes to the existing rule, effective October 15, 2019, will make it more difficult to apply for permanent residency or earn a visa if an applicant is dependent on government aid such as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, Temporary Assistance for Needy Families, housing assistance, and Medicaid.

It is important to know that the Child Nutrition Programs are not public benefits. Please continue to complete meal applications and alternative meal forms.

Second Step

As part of our PBIS supports, Castro Valley elementary schools use the Second Step program to address:

  • Social-Emotional Learning
  • Bully Prevention

  • Child Protection

Second Step is a program rooted in social-emotional learning (SEL) that helps transform schools into supportive, successful learning environments uniquely equipped to encourage children to thrive. More than just a classroom curriculum, Second Step’s holistic approach helps create a more empathetic society by providing education professionals, families, and the larger community with tools to enable them to take an active role in the social-emotional growth and safety of today’s children.

You are encouraged to access the Second Step document below for more information on the ongoing lessons and to support your child's learning at home!

Jensen Ranch PTA Updates

Dear Jensen Ranch Families,

Thank you for supporting our Thanksgiving Food Drive at JRE and it was a great success because of all of you! Thank you for your contributions and assistance. A BIG thank you to Mrs. Ari Sandoval, for all her efforts and hard work during this giving season.

Jensen Ranch has teamed up with Castro Valley Outreach again to adopt 4 families in need this holiday season. Jensen Ranch has the opportunity to make several local families' holiday wishes come true. We hope to collect all clothing items for each child and all needed gift cards for the parents. Each child has also made their own wish list for this holiday season.

How Adopt-A -Family Works:

1. Use the signup link above to make someone's wish come true (please see all 4 family tabs within the link).

2. Bring your new, unwrapped gift(s) to Room 9 by December 13th at NOON.

3. Remember (!!) to identity your gift recipient by including the family #, age and gender. Snowman labels will be available in Room 9- please fill out and attach to each gift.

4. Gift cards should be dropped off at the school office for safekeeping. Write the family #, age and gender on the envelope to identify your gift card's recipient (or use a Snowman label, also available in the office).

5. Santa's elves will wrap gifts and sort gifts to prepare for delivery. If you are interested in wrapping gifts, please sign up below or contact Ari Sandoval at arelis@stanfordalumni.org

6. Our adopted families will receive their gifts on or before Dec 15th.

Potential Parcel Tax Measure

Click Here to Access the CVUSD Local Funding Page for More Information

High-Quality Education
Castro Valley Unified School District (CVUSD) provides an excellent education that prepares students to graduate ready for competitive colleges and 21st-century careers. This is possible thanks to strong academic programs, excellent teachers, high-performing students and a supportive community.

Planning for the Future
As we look to the future, we know we cannot rely on the state to provide the level of funding our schools need. Our District is among the lowest funded in Alameda County and has already made $1.8 million in ongoing cuts in the past two years. Additionally, the Bay Area is one of the most expensive places to live in the country, and many of our teachers live right here in Castro Valley. By retaining and attracting the highest quality teachers, we can improve student achievement and continue providing an excellent education to students.

Potential Local Funding Measure
To provide dedicated funding for our schools to support programs and teachers, the Castro Valley Unified School District Board of Education is considering placing a local parcel tax measure on an upcoming ballot. Although no final decisions have been made, a measure may cost $96 per parcel per year and generate $1.5 million annually for six years.

Funds from a measure could:

  • Retain and attract highly qualified teachers
  • Preserve strong academic programs in reading, writing, science, technology, engineering, arts and math
  • Prepare students for college and careers
  • Support the health and well-being of all students
  • Keep schools clean and well-maintained

Fiscal Accountability Provisions of Potential Local Measure

  • All revenue from the measure would be spent right here in our District to support local schools and could not be taken away by the State
  • A citizens’ oversight committee and annual audits would ensure that all funds are spent as promised
  • No funds could go to administrator salaries
  • Seniors would be eligible for an exemption from the cost
