"First Street School is dedicated to guiding students to become positively contributing citizens and life-long learners."
Principal's Office
Here is our Roadrunner Weekly for the week of June 1st through June 5th. Well, this school year is finally coming to an end - it has been a unique last couple of months due to the COVID-19 closures to say the least. I wanted to thank you all SO MUCH for the incredible support you have given us and the hours of hard work you've been putting in to help us keep your students learning. While it has been a less than ideal situation, we feel as though we have learned a lot of new skills and approaches that will help make our school and district that much stronger as we move forward. As you can read in Mr. Leaman's notes below, a lot remains up in the air surrounding the start of the 2020-21 school year. What I can say definitively is that we will continue meeting, consulting, and planning over the summer to have the best model and options in place for you and our students when we return. Early this week I will be sending home a parent survey to get your thoughts on how this school year went for you and your children, as well as an opportunity to give input on what you would like to see for the coming year.
In the meantime, please continue to keep your students mentally and physically active over the summer. iReady will continue to be available as well as many of the other websites you have had access to during our closure period. As always, however, the best and simplest thing you can have your kids doing over the summer is reading for pleasure and staying as active as possible given our current limitations.
Stay healthy and safe, and remember to feel free to email your teachers and myself directly if you have any further questions or need support or help in any way! Lastly, don't forget to take part in our drive-by farewell car parade this coming Friday, June 5th. See below for you designated parade times.

Updates from Mr. Leaman - Superintendent
Opening of Schools
We are in a time of multiple guidance documents concerning opening schools. We have received guidance from the CDC, California Department of Education, California School Boards Association, and many others. It is rumored the California Department of Public Health will soon release a document. Know that we are constantly monitoring the guidance and will follow the guidance that is in place in August to the best of our abilities. One thing to keep in mind, especially in this time of daily change, is guidance can change.
I have received multiple emails that state they will not send their child to school with a mask and a similar amount that say they won’t send their child to school unless everyone wears a mask. As May comes to a close, we are working on options with the knowledge that things will change by August – that has been the story of the crisis. It is hard to believe we closed schools on March 13, 2020. It seems ages ago but it has only been months. Look at the change we have all experienced. We are hard at work planning to make sure we are as ready as we can be in August. For now, we are trying to be patient as we continue through the summer and prepare for the fall.
Budget
Many saw the recent article in the New Messenger that the district needs to reduce its budget. We are very fortunate we are in better shape than most districts. We will continue to provide a quality program to your children with the budget available to us. Some have asked if the budget reductions are affecting our building program and the good news is they are not!
Graduation
I can’t say sorry enough to our graduating class for the impact the health situation is having on their senior year. High school graduation is a rite of passage that we all go through which is full of memories. I wanted to clarify our graduation offerings as some have stated we are not going to have a physical graduation even if the public health offices allow it. The school has offered a variety of activities of which all are aware. We will have a ceremony during the summer if health officials allow it. You should know our insurance will not cover any activity that is not within health guidelines. We are going to continue to monitor the situation and hope a ceremony will fall within health guidelines sometime this summer. If we get a green light we will have a ceremony!
Medication Pick Up
Another Opportunity to Pick-Up Student Medication - Thursday, June 4 from 10:00 - 2:00
The district nurses will be in the Health Services Office located in the ECAT portable on the north end of the parking lot at Lincoln High School from 10:00 - 2:00 on Thursday, June 4 for medication pick up. Any families who had meds at a school site may pick them up during this time. All meds not picked up will be properly disposed of after June 4.
If you need to make alternate arrangements to pick up your meds or have any other health services related needs, you can email our nurses Kelley Gordan kgordon@wpusd.org or Madi Schumann mschumann@wpusd.org
Creekside Oaks and Foskett Ranch Principal Selection
After a series of interviews, and with the input of many staff members, the district has selected principals for Creekside Oaks and Foskett Ranch. Megan Dickson will serve as principal at Creekside Oaks Elementary. Ms. Dickson has served at many levels of education and is currently a vice-principal in Twin Rivers Unified School District. Gina Pasquini will serve as principal at Foskett Ranch. She also comes to us from Twin Rivers where she is serving as a principal. I know we will welcome both of these new administrators as they start our service with us!!
Recent Facebook Post
If you don’t follow us on Facebook, it is a great place to get information between updates.
Our recent update was:
With the official last day of school just one week away, we want to make sure our families have all the support and assistance they need to round out what has been, quite possibly, the most challenging school year to date. If you need any assistance, the district office is still here to answer your phone calls Monday-Friday from 9am-12pm. By this time, you should have been contacted by your child's school for the final school work turn-in day, as well as returning Chromebooks. If you haven't heard anything yet, please contact your child's teacher for these dates and times. There is still one week left to mail in your semester or annual bus pass for a refund. Please see our weekly updates for those details and instructions.

Meals for Students - Tuesday, June 2nd
From the District Office & Food Service Dept.:
PLEASE HAVE ROOM IN YOUR CAR TRUNK OR REAR OF YOUR SUV FOR THE FOOD. THIS WILL HELP US MAINTAIN SOCIAL DISTANCING AND KEEP OUR WORKERS AND YOU SAFE.
We are set for food distribution on Tuesday, June 2nd, 2020, starting at 10:30 at four locations:
- Both breakfast and lunch meals (cold packs) can be picked up at McBean Park, Lincoln High School, Glen Edwards Middle School, & Sheridan Elementary.
- Each student will receive 5 breakfasts and 5 lunches
- The distribution will begin at 10:30 with a late 4:30 PM pick-up at GEMS.
- There is no charge for the food and you do not need to qualify as low income to receive the meals. All our students are welcome.
- An equal amount of food is at each location, pick the one most convenient to you
- Students must be present to receive food
- Please follow the directions of personnel on site so we can maintain social distancing. All personnel will be wearing masks and gloves based on the recent Placer County Health recommendation.
- There is no onsite eating allowed.
- Please remember some of the meals you will receive, contain items that must be refrigerated within two hours of receiving them. Leaving food out too long at room temperature can cause bacteria to grow and therefore will be unsafe to consume.
* The Placer County Food Bank is active in Lincoln and I have attached their flyer at the end of this email."

Mental Health Support & Free Online "Love & Logic" Parenting Course
5th Grade Puberty Education
FSS 5th grade families,
One of the things we normally cover in 5th grade is puberty education. Specially designed for 5th grade girls and boys, the Always Changing & Growing Up Puberty Education Program offers resources to help educators and parents teach the important topics of puberty and development.
Typically, this would be something we could cover with your kids at the end of 5th grade (with your permission). This year, however, due to our school closure, we will need to share our resources with you and let you decide how you would like to share them with your 5th grade student. Attached below are the following:
- Parent Permission Letter
- Teacher Instructional Guide
- Teacher Presentation
Click the following links to view the videos:
- "Always Changing and Growing Up | Girls Puberty Education Video"
- "Always Changing and Growing Up | Boys Puberty Education Video"
Additional resources can be found by clicking this link and visiting the P&G School Programs site itself. If you have any questions, feel free to email your 5th grade teachers and/or me, and we'll be glad to help in any way we can.
District Office Update on Grading During School Closures
From Kerry Callahan - Deputy Superintendent of Educational Services
End of the Year Instructional Timeline
Now that it is May, we have established a instruction timeline for the rest of the year. We will use following dates to close out the school year:
- Friday, May 22, 2020 – Last day for teachers to assign classwork
- Friday, May 29, 2020 – Last day for students to complete and turn in work
- Friday, June 5, 2020 – Last day of school and last day teachers are available
Access to Instructional Links
One of the main questions we receive is where to go to find links for the various school learning tools and resources available. Click here to go to the "Homework Help" link. It can also be found under "Students" on our First St. School website.
From there, you can also access the Clever link which I've attached here directly. This is the site where kids can log in with their badges if they use them or with their district email and student ID number (if you need help finding either, please email me or your student's teacher). iReady and other instructional sites and resources can be accessed here.
Another important location to check frequently is the teacher websites themselves which can be found by clicking here. Teachers will be updating these throughout the week(s), so check back once or twice a week to stay current on classroom, school, and district updates.
And lastly, If you are looking for additional educational websites to help your child learn from home, here is a list taken from an article posted on Swing Education (20 Online Learning Resources to Get You through Coronavirus School Closures). Here's the link to the article: https://swingeducation.com/resources/20-online-learning-resources-to-help-you-get-through-coronavirus-school-closures/ Many, if not all, of the websites are offering FREE online learning opportunities for students, so it's worth exploring them with your children.
