Mrs. Ward's News
For the week of Sept. 17-21, 2018
Dress Like a Pirate Day! Ahoy, Mateys!
We will continue solving addition and subtraction problems. We will be using the strategies we have been working on for two weeks to help solve the problems. We will also learn about The Magic Pot. What happens when you put 5 items into the pot?
This week in reading we are focusing on cause and effect. We will read the story Officer Buckle and Gloria. At home talk about how you can see cause and effect in your lives. For example: When you study for your spelling test you make a good grade! When you forget to tie your shoe you might trip on the shoelace!
We will be exploring the stages of matter. We will do a hands on activity using our 5 senses to describe matter. Have your child tell you what the five sense are. Give them an item and have them describe how it feels, smells, looks, sounds, and if applicable how it tastes.
For the next several weeks, we will be reviewing character traits. This week we will focus on Trustworthiness. Talk with your student about what it means to be trustworthy. How can they show trustworthiness at home? at school?
This week in writing we will be going through the Writing Process. Did you know that not everything the kiddos write has to go all the way to the Publishing process? You can practice this without actually writing as well. Have your student tell you a story and practice adding more detail by asking questions about their story
This week we learned how to use the Pebble Go website to research national symbols and holidays. You can use this website at home too! Just the Pebble Go icon to the left. The login is: ethridge1 and the password is: school.

Sign-Up for the 21 Day Healthy Snack Challenge
When it comes to the 21 Day Healthy Snack Challenge, Ethridge has had the highest participation rate in Texas for the past 3 years. We were around 90 % participation and that’s good, but 100 % participation would really "shiver our timbers." So let’s encourage ALL our students to join us as Ethridge strives to leave no one behind in our quest for the treasure of good health. The 21 Day Healthy Snack Challenge is a great opportunity for all of us to be healthy pirates, taking responsibility for our own well being in a body we help to create with our choices.
Sept. 17 @ 12:01 a.m. through Oct. 1st @11:59 p.m. — On-line sign-up at kids-teaching-kids.comOnly parents may sign children up using parent email. No one will be allowed to sign up after Oct.1. Parents should write down their unique 8 digit survey code that is given to them when they sign up their child. They’ll need it to complete the challenge survey in a few weeks. Note: Parents will be given the option to add a phone number in order for the secret code to be texted to them along with reminders. Texts will be sent on Weds and Saturdays with recipe ideas and finally right before the survey begins. THIS IS STRICTLY OPTIONAL and parents may decide to opt out of texts at any time.
Oct. 1st - Oct. 21st — 21 Day Challenge! The challenge isn’t complicated. Feel free to use the recipes in the healthy snack booklet or come up with your own thing. The idea. A healthy snack is as simple as choosing a banana instead of a candy bar or a handful of almonds instead of a handful of M&M’s. Give students reminders about making healthy snack choices and how they make life better. Let’s enjoy an all around healthy month as we pursue Fun Run exercise success alongside our 21 Day Challenge! Be a role model of good health by having a healthy snack with the kids.
Nov. 5th @ 12:01 a.m. through Nov. 12th @ 11:59 p.m. — Remind parents to be on the lookout for an email from MCCH that links to a short survey required to complete the challenge. They’ll need their unique survey code they received when they signed up their child.
MCCH will provide rewards for all students who signed-up for the challenge and completed the post survey. But let’s encourage healthy snacking because great health is the true reward of great choices.
