Carrillo Community Update
January 28 - February 3
Message from Ms. Bittel
I hope you all had a wonderful weekend! As we round out January we look forward to all the excitement that February brings. February is Love of Reading Month and we hope to have a wide variety of guest readers on campus sharing their love of reading with our cougars. If you are able to participate, we encourage you to sign up using the link in the "This Week's Highlights" section of the update. It is also African American History Month. In their classes, students will be learning about the triumphs and struggles of African Americans throughout US History. Next week is also Counselor Appreciation Week. Ms. Freeman has some fun events planned, including a "Dress Like A Counselor Day." Spring conferences are scheduled for next week as well, so we will have 2 half days so teachers can meet with parents. Finally, the end of the month brings a well-loved Tucson tradition, Fiesta de los Vaqueros!
Throughout it all, we expect our cougars to keep focused on their studies by putting forth their best effort every day, being at school on time, every day, doing their homework, and keeping up with their nightly reading. For our cougars who are still working to master grade-level standards, remember IXL and other online intervention platforms are a great way to get better at home. A big shout out to Ms. Vasquez and Ms. Matsushino's classes who have over 7 hours each of at-home practice! Way to go!
Thank you all. Let's make this final week of January a great one!
-Ms. Bittel

Kind Campus Weekly Activity
Kindness Question of the Month
Why does it take courage to be kind?
How can we be kind in tough situations?
“Ripple Effect” Exercise
With your student, brainstorm a list of kind acts that you might do or see on campus, at home, or in the community. Examples include introducing yourself to a new student, helping to put away dishes, or seeing someone pick up a piece of trash. Using thier ideas, create “Ripple Effect” posters to hang at home. Write the kind act in the center of the poster, then draw a circle around it. Think about how that one act of kindness impacts the surrounding community, be it individuals or the overall environment. Draw a line from the kind act in the center to a new spot on the poster, and write down the effect. Effects could include new students smiling at others, family members having more time together, or people appreciating their shared spaces. How might these effects spread? Leave plenty of space and ask students for suggestions to add more connections to the kind act, and track how far its impact can go. Watching the growing reach of individual kind acts can influence future words and actions, and serves as a powerful visual reminder of what it means to be part of a kind campus or community.
This Week's Highlights
Perfect Attendance Rankings
We are still working to increase our average daily attendance to 95% (the state expectation for attendance).
Attendance is the number 1 predictor of student success. Students who are absent miss important concepts and have a harder time making up learning from when they are out. That is why it is so important for students to be in school on time, every day.
Here are this month's top 5 classes for perfect attendance as well as the percentage of students in each class who have not missed a single day of school this month. Keep it up!
1. Ms. Morales (Kindergarten) 58%
1. Ms John (5th Grade) 58%
2. Ms. Matsushino (2nd Grade) 57%
4. Ms. Leyva (1st Grade) 56%
5. Ms. Barraza (2nd Grade) 52%
Stay tuned to see which class had the overall top attendance for January in next week's update.
Love of Reading Volunteers
Love of Reading Month is just a few days away. We invite all Carrillo Community members to come to share their love of reading with the students here at Carrillo. To sign up, just select a day and time that works for you and Ms. Stroup will coordinate with classrooms that are looking for readers. Don't know what to read? MS. Brandy has a selection of books ready for you to borrow! Thank you for taking time to share your love of reading and be a positive role model for our young cougars!
Books and Bundts!
Thank you to Carrillo parent Holly Graff for sending this announcement over. Nothing Bundt Cakes has a special way to make reading even sweeter! Elementary students who read for 400 or more minutes a month and complete the reading tracker can turn in their reading tracker for a free bundtlet every month between February 1, 2024 and May 1, 2024 . That's 3 months of free bundt cakes for doing their reading homework every night! To participate, simply open the attachment below on your computer, print them out, and take them to Nothing Bundt Cakes when complete.
General Information
Improving Reading and Math at Home
All students at Carrillo have access to a wonderful resource to support their continued growth in Reading and Math. That resource is IXL. Research shows that doing just 1 extra session a day can have a tremendous impact on student learning. Our younger students also have access to RAZ-Plus to support literacy.
To access IXL or RAZ Plus students just log into their Clever accounts and select the icons. Clever can be accessed from the Carrillo Webpage by selecting the "Applications" tab in the upper right-hand corner of the page. Please contact your student's teacher if they have any trouble.

Social Media
Parents, we are asking for your help with social media. As a reminder, most social media user agreements state that users must be 13 or older to have an account. Please take a moment to discuss the reasons for the age limits with your students.
Most social media sites do not allow attacks or abuse based on race, ethnicity, national origin, sex, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, religion, disability or disease. Please encourage students to be socially conscious and report any accounts that violate those policies directly to the social media platform before blocking the account.
Parent-Teacher Meetings
The teaching staff is quite busy preparing for daily instruction in the morning. Thank you for emailing to schedule a meeting time with them rather than just dropping in. Teacher email addresses can be found on our staff webpage. Thank you for your help!
Cafeteria Offerings
We are encouraging every family to apply for Free/Reduced Lunch. The number of accepted applications directly impacts our Title I funding, so thank you for taking a moment to complete it, even if your student doesn't plan to eat school lunch. The application is located on the TUSD Meals website.
The Food Services website also has a page dedicated to this month's breakfast and lunch offerings. You can even even get a mobile app for your phone online.
Carrillo Online Spirit Store
Looking for Carrillo spirit gear? Adrian from Big Frog has set up this year's online store. You can purchase this year's "Success Across the Eduverse" shirt as well as classic Carrillo spirit gear.
Transportation and Parent Pick Up and Drop Off Reminders
TUSD Buses
For more information, visit Transportation's website to see if your student qualifies for FREE transportation and to begin routing.
Morning Drop Off Reminders
Just a friendly reminder that the earliest students can be dropped off is 7:35 a.m. at 17th Street. The office does not open until 8:00 and while Ms. Bittel is usually on campus well before 8:00, she is often in meetings or other parts of the building and unable to hear the doorbell. From 7:35 - 8:00 the only safe drop off is 17th Street. Thank you for helping us to keep all our cougars safe in the morning.
After School Reminders
The primary pick-up is 17th Street. Due to the size of our office, students will be unable to wait in the office. Parents, if you are parking up front, we invite you to wait in the Carrillo Art Gallery to meet your students.
Affter school Pick-Up Updates and Request
We know that the 17th Street area can get a bit congested at pickup. To help alleviate the situation, the City of Tucson has installed new signs to direct traffic and changed the direction of Samaniego Street.
The City of Tucson is requesting that families picking up on 17th Street exit the neighborhood using the following route.
- Travel west on 17th Street
- Turn south on 11th Avenue
- Turn west to access the frontage road or turn east to return to Main Avenue and 22nd Street.
Our neighbors kindly ask that you leave the driveways and corners open when you park so they can enter and exit their homes safely. If you do wait in your car along Samaniego, thank you for waiting at the bottom of the hill on the east side of the street so the roadway is clear for all vehicles and families crossing the street.
We are also asking families to arrive no earlier than 2:35 on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday and no earlier than 1:35 on Wednesdays. Parents of intermediate students, if you plan to arrive at 2:50 or 1:50, that will give the primary students time to load up and reduce your wait time.
Thank you also for being patient, driving slowly, and watching the road carefully. The streets behind Carrillo are narrow and we want to avoid any further accidents. Thank you for helping us keep our Cougars and our community safe.
Follow these signs.
Thank you for exiting via S. 11th Ave.

PTO News and Volunteering Opportunities
PTO Meeting this week.
Our next PTO Meeting will be this week, on Wednesday, February 28th. It's a bit later due to Valentine's Day and Rodeo Break. We hope to see many of you there. Remember, Ms. Bittel awards students a Cougar Paw if their parents attend and this is a great way to be involved with supporting the school's mission and vision. (The mission and vision are at the bottom of the update.)
-Carrillo PTO
Please email PTO if you have any questions.
Volunteers / Visitors
We encourage all parents to register as volunteers on the TUSD website as the process takes a few weeks to complete. Parents cannot volunteer on field trips without completing this in advance.
We ask non-parental volunteers (grandparents, aunts, uncles, community members, etc.) to contact the office before registering as a volunteer so we can explain the process and help identify volunteer opportunities.
