A Message from Your Principal

I am a mom. In the span of my life, it will likely be my most important role. I have parented two girls through young adolescence, which I like to think gives me a little street cred.

I am also an educator. With joy, I have worked with young adolescents for over 20 years. They challenge me and fulfill me and inspire me every day. After 20 years in the middle, I like to think this also gives me a little street cred, too.

So I hope you will listen when I tell you this.

I have supported my children and some of yours through very dark places as a result of social media use. The impact continues to grow exponentially, not in a positive direction. I cannot stress the importance of understanding social media enough.

As a parent, I recently came across this article that I think is worth your time. This is not sensational. This is the truth. Your kids, my kids, OUR kids, are seeing, hearing, accessing, absorbing all sorts of things that we would never knowingly set in front of them. For years, I have been saying, "My best advice is to stay smarter than your kids about social media." That have never been more true.

Beyond the article, I invite you to join us Thursday for our next IndieFlix screening, this time of a film called Like. Brought to you by the producers of Angst, this documentary explores the impact of social media on our lives and the effects of technology on the brain. Social media is a tool and social platforms are a place to connect, share, and care... but is that what's really happening? Use this link to join us for this virtual screening at 7pm, followed by a discussion.

This film is suitable for ages 10 and up. We would recommend ages 10-17 view the film with an adult.

Click here to join us Thur, Jan 27 @ 7pm.

Discussion to following the screening.
