Social Emotional Support Specialist for Elementary
A new position titled Social Emotional Support Specialist will be added to the counseling team to support teachers and students on our elementary campuses. We welcome Shanna Malone from Miller Elementary who has extensive training in Trauma Informed Care, Conscious Discipline and classroom management/emotional regulation. She also has her master’s degree in educational leadership. Shanna will be an added resource to our teachers, counselors and admin staff to assist with student behavior intervention as well as coaching/consulting with teachers. She will be available to meet with teachers during conference times, observe in classrooms and assist in the SAT process for social/emotional support for students. She will be housed at JAV but will travel to all campuses. More information will come soon regarding her schedule, rotation on campuses, and her availability.
HB3 for Reading Standards K-3
If you teach ELAR in grades k-3, please read.
As the Legislative Session wrapped up, part of HB3 is directly related to reading standards for K-3. Here is what we know at this time:
Provide for the use of a phonics curriculum for reading instruction in K-3 (the new ELAR adoption will take care of this)
Not later than the 2020-2021 school year, EACH Kindergarten, 1st, 2nd, and 3rd grade teacher AND principal will have to attend a Literacy Achievement Academy. Asst. Principals will be expected to attend, as well. We are trying to work with Region 10 to host in MISD once the academies are set so that we can get all of our K-3 teachers, elementary principals, and APs trained simultaneously by this required deadline (most likely next summer).
For 2021-2022 and subsequent school years, teachers and principals initially employed in the grade level attend a Literacy Achievement Academy developed under TEC 21.4552 before the teacher placement in the grade level (K-3) or principal placement at a campus serving grades K-3. Basically, all new hires beginning in 2021-2022 will have to have the academy training before being placed in a K-3 classroom or campus serving K-3.
MIT Crew
For the 19-20 school year we will have Melissa Bartlett one day a week. Melissa has been a part of the MIT crew for many years.
We will also have Jan Duncan two days a week. Jan was just hired. She is joining us from Baxter Elementary. Jan has taught many years as a second grade teacher. She completed her Master's Degree in Lesson Design Using Technology.
Please welcome them to our team!

Istation Summer Home Guides
Stop the Summer Slide with Istation’s Help
On average, students’ achievement scores decline over summer vacation by at least one month’s worth of school year learning. Istation’s Stopping the Summer Slide ebook can help you keep your students reading all summer long.
Please Welcome
Also, please welcome Sydney Maggiora to DME. She will work part-time as a dyslexia teacher. Sydney worked this past year in Waxahachie as a dyslexia teacher. Her daughter Chiara is in second grade at our school.
Summer Compliance Trainings 2019-2020
As discussed in the District-Wide Staff Meeting this week, the 2019-2020 MISD Compliance Trainings will be completed through the Region 10 Bundle this year.
Courses will not open until July 1, 2019, and Region 10 will have a new platform that is not yet ready to launch. Therefore, we will have to send out login instructions to staff in late June when we know more. All staff will need to be sure and check email by the end of June for compliance login information.
Suicide Training will be available through Region 10. If staff attends Mental Health First Aid at MPowered Summer Academy, that counts as their suicide compliance. If you are a staff member attending the Mental Health First Aid training you would know!
This Compliance Form includes all job categories and required compliance trainings. The instructions indicate courses cannot be accessed and completed prior to July 1, 2019.
Please do not attempt to complete any compliance courses prior to July 1, as those courses open at this time are for 2018-2019 only.
For Contracted Staff: Since MISD is offering an Exchange/Comp Day for Compliance Training this year, teachers would have to have all compliance completed by August 12 in order to have that day off.
It is the expectation of the district that compliance trainings are completed before school starts moving forward, therefore compliance deadlines will be August 19, 2019.
For Para Staff: Up to 6 hours of compliance training are due by August 12 in order for para staff to receive that day off as an exchange day.
Otherwise, para staff can work August 12 to complete up to 6 hours of compliance training. It is the expectation of the district that all remaining compliance trainings (anything over the first 6 hours required for compliance) are completed by August 19, prior to the first day of school and completed during normal workday hours during back-to-school PD week for para staff.
Please sign up for Summer Academies
