2023-24 School Calendar
A MESSAGE FROM PRINCIPAL ANDERSON - WELCOME TO THE 2023-24 SCHOOL YEAR!
On behalf of the Glenbard East High School administration, faculty, and staff, I’d like to officially welcome you to the 2023-24 school year. I’d also like to extend a special welcome to the families of our incoming freshman and transfer students entering Glenbard East for the first time. As a reminder, the official first day of school for all students is Thursday, August 17th.
The start of a new school year brings with it hope, a fresh start, and exciting changes. One change for this school year that we are very excited about is the implementation of a new bell schedule that will provide all students with the opportunity to get academic assistance during the school day.
Regardless of the exciting changes ahead of us, the pillars for student success remain in place. First, it is important that they are here. Second, it is important that students are actively engaged in their learning. And third, students are encouraged to get involved.
Attendance
I can’t stress enough the importance of students being in school every day and on time when possible. Showing up to school and showing up on time matters. A few missed days here and there, even if they are excused absences, can add up to too much lost learning time and put students behind in school. As a school community we must reduce our chronic absenteeism rate. Together we can do that by increasing our daily average attendance (ADA). Our goal is to increase our ADA to 94% over the next two years. Please prioritize your student’s attendance when making scheduling plans. Additionally, if a student is healthy, they should be in school. Your assistance is needed.
Engagement
In addition to being present, students must actively engage in their learning. One way to ensure that is by eliminating distractions and a major distraction for the youth of today are cell phones. While we will do our best to eliminate this distraction by enforcing our cell phone policy, as parents/guardians you can assist as well by not calling or texting your child during school hours. If you must contact your child, please call the school and we will share your message. We ask for your help in helping our students remain focused on their learning while at school.
Extracurricular Participation
We expect every student to get involved in our extracurricular programs. We have 31 sports programs and over 60 clubs and activities for students to choose from. Whether it is a sport or club/activity, there is something for everyone. Extracurricular involvement has proven to be very beneficial to student success and we want all students to take advantage of the opportunities to enhance their high school experience.
We stand committed to serve every student, every day in their quest to be a Glenbard East graduate that is self-empowered, thinks critically, embraces diversity, communicates, creates, and collaborates.
On behalf of the faculty at Glenbard East High School, I want to again welcome all of you and thank you for being a part of the Glenbard East school community where EXCELLENCE IS TRADITION. I’m looking forward to an amazing school year! We Are East!!!
BACK TO SCHOOL WEEK
**All students must attend Back-To-School week to receive their Glenbard East ID card and have their yearbook photo taken. If they are unable to attend, they will be required to secure their ID card on the first day of school and will likely miss class time.
Students are only permitted to take part in Back-to-School Week during their scheduled time.
Remember to send your student with a form of payment for classroom materials for any past due fees. Check, cash or Visa/MasterCard are accepted. Please make checks payable to Glenbard East High School - students will fill in the amount owed and will receive a receipt for their purchase.
PICTURES: Student ID photos taken during Back-to-School Days and will also be used as your student’s yearbook picture. Students should dress neatly and in good taste.
STUDENT ID REQUIREMENTS: Students will be required to carry, and present upon request, their student ID to any Glenbard staff member. Student IDs are required for entry to the building, to get on the bus, lunch purchase, library and lab check in, etc.
FRESHMAN ORIENTATION INFORMATION
Orientation will occur on Friday, August 11, and will begin promptly at 7:30 A.M. Please make sure your student brings his/her schedule on Orientation Day so that our Link Mentors can help them locate their classrooms. Your student is encouraged not to bring backpacks, purses or other items as the day is quite active. Because the day is active, please make sure that your student wears comfortable clothing that does not restrict movement.
This is a student only function so we encourage you to let your child attend on her or his own.
Please see the Bus Routes for Freshman Orientation.
NEW BELL SCHEDULE IN 2023-24
MORNING DROP-OFF
All buses will drop off students by Door #1. All students being dropped off by a car should be dropped off at Door #24 on Main Street.
FRESHMAN/TRANSFER STUDENT HEALTH EXAMINATIONS ARE DUE BY AUGUST 17, 2023
A Certificate of Child Health Examination (also known as a school physical) is required to enroll in high school for incoming freshmen and/or transfer students. This is different from a sports physical which is needed for athletic participation. The school physical must be signed by a physician, nurse practitioner or a physician’s assistant, and be less than 1 year old at the start of the school year. For example, if the last physical is dated 8/6/2022, it will not be accepted to start of the 2023-24 school year (the first day is 8/17/2023). This is a mandatory requirement. Your child will be excluded from school if this requirement is not met.
All medical documentation may be hand delivered to Glenbard East, mailed to the health office, faxed to 630-424-6438, or emailed to laura_grabowski@glenbard.org. Photos of documents are accepted if copies are clearly legible, please email. Medical forms can be found on the GBE website under the Parents/Families tab by clicking on the Health Services option - or by following this link: https://www.glenbardeasths.org/health-services/
PROOF OF SENIOR VACCINATION REQUIREMENT IS DUE BY AUGUST 17, 2023
The Illinois Department of Public Health requires all students entering or continuing in Grade 12 to show proof of receiving two doses of the meningococcal vaccine. Please provide the health office with proof of vaccination before the first day of school. This is a senior year requirement mandated by the Illinois Department of Health.

STUDENT ID'S
It is recommended that all students wear their student ID when they report to school and at extracurricular events. This is a very important safety measure as we need to ensure that everyone in the building can be properly identified. ID’s are also required to purchase lunch, check in to various offices throughout the building, and ride the bus to and from school. Repeated failure to present a valid student ID may result in disciplinary consequences.
DRESS FOR SUCCESS
Student appearance guidelines are clearly articulated in the student handbook. Dress or appearance cannot be disruptive to the educational program or contain vulgarity, obscenity, or promote excessive violence or illegal activities, such as alcohol, tobacco products, drugs/drug use. Dress code violations will be referred to the Dean’s office. We ask that parents help us by being attentive to these regulations.
LATEX ALLERGIES
Schools across the nation are experiencing more and more students who have latex allergies. Often, students with this allergy can have severe and even life-threatening reactions if exposed to latex resins and powders. For their safety, there are certain latex products we no longer allow on campus. Latex balloons and “Silly String” pose a significant health threat to students with a latex allergy. These products are not allowed on campus at any time, including after school, evening, and weekend events. With this in mind, we request your help: Please talk with your children about this health and safety issue. Some students might not understand the reason for a “balloon ban.” At East, we want all parents to know that their children are safe on campus.
RULES FOR STUDENTS TAKING MEDICATIONS AT SCHOOL
Students are not allowed to take prescription or nonprescription medications at school until their physician and parent/guardian complete and submit the School Medication Permission Form to the school nurse. This form is available from the Health Office or it may be printed from the Glenbard East Nurse website.
Prescription medication should be brought to the Health Office in a container labeled by the pharmacy that includes:
1) The name of the student
2) The name of the medication
3) The dosage
4) The time and route of administration
Nonprescription medication (Motrin, Advil, Tylenol, etc.) should remain in the original container and be labeled with the student’s name.
Students are not allowed to carry any medication while at school except prescribed asthma inhalers, EpiPens, insulin or Glucagon pens. Students carrying these medications also need to submit to the school nurse an individualized Emergency Action Plan signed by their physician. If you have further questions, please phone the Health Office at 630-424-7133 and ask to speak with one of the nurses.
ATTENDANCE POLICY
Not surprisingly, research indicates that students perform better in their coursework when they attend classes regularly. While we realize that occasional absences are a reality in schools, we believe that excessive absence negatively impact student learning. We hope that, as parents, you agree and will assist us by doing your part in sending your child to school on a daily basis. In an effort to decrease excessive absences, Glenbard East has instituted the following attendance policy:
Any student who is absent for more than twelve (12) days, excused or unexcused, in one semester, will be considered as having excessive absences. These absences do not include those that result from participation in school-approved activities such as field trips. Once the student has accrued twelve absences, any additional absences within the semester will not be cleared without a doctor's note.
Furthermore, once a student is absent 15 days in a semester (discounting field trips and other school-approved absences), the student may be in danger of not earning credit for the semester and/or may be withdrawn from classes for excessive unexcused absences.
The full attendance policy can be found in the student handbook located on the school’s website as well as on your student’s iPad. We strongly encourage you to review this policy with your student.
Remember, student absences must be reported by calling Attendance at 630-627-2595.
CELL PHONES AT SCHOOL
Use of cell phones or other electronic devices are permitted during the school day. While use is allowed, students should be sure to use their devices at the appropriate time and in the appropriate areas. Please note that cell phone use in the classroom is prohibited. Upon entering the classroom, students are expected to stow away their cell phone, as well as earbuds/headphones. Glenbard East is committed to using the iPad as our acceptable device to support student learning inside and outside of the classroom.
Additionally, if listening to music in the halls during the passing period, students are expected to use headphones. Use in the hallway is restricted to texting and listening to music (students should not be talking on the phone). If an emergency call must be received or made, students should stop into a nearby office. Failure to comply with these guidelines could lead to disciplinary consequences. Additionally, students are encouraged to secure their devices at all times. Glenbard East takes no responsibility for the loss of or damage to electronic devices. The entire policy can be found in the student handbook that can be found on the school’s website, as well as, your student’s iPad.

More information regarding registration dates and steps will be shared with all our families in early September.
AP INFORMATION
AP students (those with at least one AP class) will register with College Board in each of their AP classes at the beginning of the school year. AP teachers will give students a Join Code that will give them access to course-specific resources and assignments. When students join their class section, they will automatically be registered for the AP exam in May.
Students can prepare by checking their College Board login at https://myap.collegeboard.org and resetting the password if necessary. Even first-year AP students already have a College Board Account and login after taking the PSAT in 8th grade. Please do not create a second account! This can create problems in the future when sending scores to colleges. Those who can log in quickly will take only a few minutes to join the AP Classroom. Thank you for preparing ahead. Here are some helpful hints as you review your College Board account:
- Check that it is the students’ full legal name (i.e., Patricia, not Patty) on the account.
- Use a student personal email address instead of a school email address. School email is eventually inactivated. Using a personal email address maintains access. It is highly recommended to change it if necessary.
If you have trouble accessing the account, please contact College Board at 866-630-9305. We are very limited in what we can do to help with account access.
Students can save their College Board login somewhere in their phones - in notes or photos. They will use it multiple times in high school, so they will want to keep it safe and accessible.
Email questions to beth_mcnett@glenbard.org.

SUPERINTENDENT, DR. DAVID LARSON, OUTLINES BENEFITS OF GLENBARD HOUR
I am excited about the new school year and the many opportunities that come at this time of year. In particular, I am enthusiastic about the Glenbard Hour in our new school day schedule.
Glenbard Hour
The number one need identified by students, parents/guardians and staff in the November 2021 survey about the school day was time for student supports and learning extensions throughout the day. The Glenbard Hour addresses those needs.
During the twice weekly Glenbard Hour, every teacher and every student will be involved in making choices; seeking help; getting involved in physical activities; learning new concepts and gaining new skills. This dedicated time each week will allow students to access their teachers for the support they need to experience academic success. It also will reduce the need for students to arrive early or stay after school to seek assistance.
Most Glenbard Hour sessions will be devoted to student agency. The goal of student agency days is for students to use these instructional minutes in areas that most benefit them. Examples include:
- Students getting help from their teachers
- Extending students’ learning
- Students collaborating with peers
- Tests and lab retakes
- Future planning through college/postsecondary presentations
The Glenbard Hour also will feature advisory sessions on topics such as:
- Course selection
- Postsecondary planning, skill development in self-management, self-awareness, responsible decision making, relationship building and social awareness
- Safety drills
- Surveys
- Standardized testing
- Assemblies
- Award ceremonies and more
Glenbard Hour App
As part of our preparation for the new school year, we are developing a Glenbard Hour app for students’ Glenbard iPads. Through the app:
- Students will have up-to-date information on their grades to make responsible decisions about their Glenbard Hour choices.
- Students will schedule where they will spend the Glenbard Hour sessions devoted to student agency; for example, working with their school counselor or meeting with a study group.
- Students will check into spaces where they will spend the Glenbard Hour sessions devoted to student agency, such as in the library or AP Cafe.
- Teachers will be able to assign students to spaces, as needed; for example, to a test center to make up an exam. A teacher who assigns a student to a space would discuss that with the student.
Preparation for the Glenbard Hour
I appreciate the great work of many administrators and faculty and staff members who have been researching and developing systems to implement the Glenbard Hour. Preparation for the Glenbard Hour has included:
- District-level committees made up of teachers, support staff and administrators to look at logistics, adaptive needs and technical needs
- Building-level committees made up of teachers, support staff and administrators to look at logistics, adaptive needs, technical needs and curriculum
- Visits to Naperville Central and Downers Grove North high schools to experience their implementation Conversations with key personnel at Maine Township High School District 207, Naperville Community Unit School District 203 and DuPage High School District 99
- Ongoing curriculum development
- Designing schedules and teacher teams
- Development of experiences/opportunities to support diverse student body
- Creation of the Glenbard Hour app
Overall, the Glenbard Hour will benefit each student, whether they need help with classwork or are doing well and want to tap into extended learning opportunities. I am eager to welcome back students and see the positive outcomes of the Glenbard Hour.
