STEM Update from Mrs. Benson

STEM experiences are going strong this fourth quarter. Both kindergarten and 2nd grade are in the middle of their robotics units. Kindergarten students and their teachers meet with Mrs. Benson weekly to problem solve and use critical thinking skills with our Bee Bots, hand-held robots purchased with a grant from the Zionsville Education Foundation. Thank you ZEF, for giving these youngsters the opportunity to learn with age-appropriate technology. They love it and are stretching their minds in each session! Second Grade students are using our Lego WeDo robots to learn about programming, sensors, energy transfer through a system, measurement, data collection, and scientific testing. They are doing a phenomenal job and seem to look forward to each session.

Finally, students have begun to work on our fruit and vegetable garden. Third grade is making the grand plan and putting in the hard work during RACE on Fridays. They will get assistance from various grade levels and classroom contributions as well. Our summer garden coordinator is eager to line up volunteers to help with garden maintenance over the summer. Contact Mrs. Benson if you would like to be part of the team. kbenson@zcs.k12.in.us

Fourth Grade Music Program

Fourth grade families and friends,

Please join us next Wednesday evening, May 1st, at 6:30pm (doors open at 6:10) for Boone Meadow’s very first student composition program! This program will feature three pieces of music written and performed by our three incredible fourth grade classes. By empowering students to make their own decisions and take charge of every step in the music making process, this program is the culmination of months of collaboration, creativity, and hard work. As a result, we are excited to share our three class compositions: “Bark the Shark” by Mrs. Meyer’s class, “The Bacon Song” by Mrs. Schermerhorn’s class, and “The Elevator Song” by Mr. Noel’s class. Please consider prioritizing this event as you manage busy schedules.

Students should arrive to the music room between 6:10-6:20 in casual dress while family and friends report to the cafeteria. An art show featuring student artwork will be displayed in the front lobby after the program. Thank you for your support of the arts at Boone Meadow, and we hope to see you next week!

Zionsville Passing Flag Football League: Grades 2nd-6th

Zionsville Passing Flag Football League is designed to give student athletes an opportunity to participate in football without pads and contact. High School/Middle School coaches will be running the practices and games with assistance from ZYFL youth league coaches. We will focus on developing the skills needed to execute and defend the passing game. All participants will have an opportunity to run routes, catch footballs, and defend receivers in practice and games. There is no blocking or tackling involved in the league.

Teams will consist of 5 v 5 on a condensed field, and quarterbacks will be selected through an evaluation process. The teams will be grouped by grade level (possibly combining grades 2/3, and 4/5/6 depending on the number of signups).

Jerseys will be provided with signups as well as mouthpieces and flags. Football or soccer cleats are recommended but no metal baseball spikes.

Thursdays @ 6:15pm - 7:30pm

Important-Updated Immunization Requirements for 2019-2020

The Indiana State Department of Health school immunization requirements for 2019-2020 have been updated. Click here to view these new requirements as they have recently changed. Students who do not have the Hepatitis A series may need to get the first dose as soon as possible as there is a minimum interval of six calendar months between the first and second doses. Religious and medical objections to the immunization requirements must be updated and signed each school year. Please feel free to send updated immunization records to the health clinic as you receive them. Contact the school nurse or your physician’s office with any questions.

Texts from SchoolMessenger

From time to time Boone Meadow uses SchoolMessenger to send a text to all of the families. If you haven't been receiving texts from us, you may need to opt-in by sending YES to the SchoolMessenger short code of 68453. Contact Beth Kiel in the front office if you have any questions!

Attention all parents/guardians! Have you ever thought about getting paid for the time you spend at our school? Becoming a substitute teacher would do just that for you! Think of it as a paid volunteer position. You still get the opportunity to control your schedule and locations you work but have the added benefit of a little extra pocket money! If you are interested in this opportunity you may apply directly on the ZCS website or simply click here! You may also contact the subcoordinator (subcoordinator@zcs.k12.in.us ) for more information.

Thank you!

Volunteers and Visitor Background Checks

CRIMINAL BACKGROUND CHECKS FOR VOLUNTEERS

We value partnerships with our families and welcome parents and guardians to serve as volunteers in our schools. Each ZCS building offers a wide variety of volunteer opportunities.

Examples include:

  • Field Trip Chaperones
  • Out of Town/Overnight Chaperones
  • Tutors
  • Volunteer Coaches
  • Classroom Helpers (PTO parties/room parents)
  • Library Helpers
  • After Prom Workers
  • Field Day/Jog-A-Thon Volunteers
  • Book Fair Sales/Athletic Ticket Sales

During the school day, all volunteers are expected to sign in at the front office. Prior to the volunteer opportunity, all volunteers must sign a Non-disclosure Acknowledgement Form and have successfully completed a Full Criminal History Background Check. Necessary background check paperwork is available on the ZCS website at the Volunteers/BRAVO link and should be submitted at least 10 days prior to the intended volunteer date. Volunteers must also view the state mandated confidentiality/bullying video, provided on the Volunteer/BRAVO website. The volunteer will pay the fee* for the full background check which will expire after 5 years. The link to apply for the full background check can be accessed on the Volunteers/BRAVO link on the ZCS main webpage. For more information, contact the Volunteer/BRAVO Coordinator.

CRIMINAL BACKGROUND CHECKS FOR VISITORS

During the school day, all visitors must enter via the front door and sign-in at the front office. Visitors need to be prepared to present a government issued photo ID which will be scanned against the National Sex Offender Registry. All visitors will be issued a visitor badge/tag to be worn inside the building at all times.

Examples Include:

  • Lunch Guests
  • Classroom Guest Speakers
  • Classroom Special Events (Grandparent Day/Famous Hoosiers/etc.)
  • Parent/Teacher Conferences

We ask that all visitors schedule an appointment to meet with teachers, counselors, administrators and all other staff members so that we may best serve everyone. Visitors other than parents/guardians must be prearranged and organized through the main office.

*ZCS thanks all volunteers for generous support of our youth and schools. Thank you, too, for supporting assurance of student and staff safety by completing and paying for a volunteer background check.
