Round Lake High School/Safe Habor Adolescent Recovery Progam

Summer 2019 Newsletter

A Note From The Director...

As we come to the end of our first year in East Jordan, it is a good time to reflect on what we have achieved, update you on some important changes, and look forward to an even more successful 2019/2020.

Our year here could not have occurred without the endless energy, skills and devotion of the Round Lake and SHARP staff. Thanks and well done to an incredible group of professionals.

I would also like to thank the East Jordan Public Schools who graciously provided our kids with breakfast and lunch each day and for the exceptional service provided by the custodial staff in taking care of all the building issues that would arise.

The student population we serve are typically "At Risk" youth who are struggling to keep up, have fallen below grade level and for some, given up. This year we had two seniors in our midst and both graduated ahead of schedule. We had a young person complete the eighth grade, one moving on to being a Sophomore and two that were able to get themselves back on track to grade level. These are major milestones for these young people and we congratulate them on their accomplishments. For those that graduated, we wish them the best in their future endeavors.

As our probation students begin their summer vacations our recovery youth continue to work tirelessly on their efforts to live a clean and healthy lifestyle. In addition, to their recovery work we keep their academic skills tuned by involving them in our summer school program.

Our summer school program will be running for seven weeks this summer and will afford our youth the opportunity to complete classes they were working on over the school year, and gain additional credits in an effort to get them closer to graduation. Our academic platform for these student is Edgenuity, or E 20/20. Edgenuity partners with schools and districts to bring a world-class learning experience to classrooms of any size and shape using cutting-edge digital tools and research-based instructional strategies. Edgenuity’s online curriculum and learning solutions are designed to support all educators and students, and can be easily customized to meet the unique needs of any school, classroom, and student.

We are already in the planning stages for our move back into Charlevoix during the 2019/2020 school year. Our home in East Jordan has been temporary until the new Charlevoix Elementary School is completed. Once the elementary kids move into their new building we will be moving into the vacated location on Division Street where this will be our new permanent home.

We are grateful to wrap up a very successful school year, looking forward to keeping our youth on track this summer, and excited about what new challenges and possibilities lie ahead in the 2019/2020 school year.

An innovative trauma-informed substance abuse treatment program where youth find safe sanctuary to heal and move forward.

This program is a product of a collaborative agreement between the Charlevoix County Probate/Family Court (CCP/FC), Harbor Hall, Inc. and exceptional clinicians with extensive experience in adolescent substance abuse, adolescent mental health and trauma-informed care.

SHARP offers a multi-model approach to Substance Abuse Treatment that includes:

  • Comprehensive Substance Abuse Assessment
  • Psychological Screening utilizing the Millon Adolescent Clinical Inventory (MACI)
  • Trauma-Informed Screening
  • Trauma-Informed Substance Abuse Treatment
  • Interdisciplinary Team approach
  • Intensive psycho-education for stress reduction developing safe coping strategies when experiencing toxic stress
  • Family involvement with Sunday parent workshops

Additionally, a truly cutting edge, state-of-science program includes:

Seeking Safety for Adolescents (SSA): A unique trauma-informed adolescent substance abuse treatment program developed by Lisa Najavits, PhD. at Boston University School of Medicine. SSA addresses the “great divide” we face in moving from assessment of substance abuse and trauma to actual mitigation of the negative impact on young people’s lives. SSA utilizes both individual and group therapy. SSA is accountability-driven, action-oriented, and detail-focused creating safety while fostering stabilization.

What makes SHARP the best choice for a referral?

SHARP is the first court-administered adolescent substance abuse treatment program in Michigan to offer all phases of treatment: stabilization, assessment, treatment and transition services, as well as, meeting education requirements from one location. For over 16 years, Charlevoix County Probate & Family Court has successfully provided adolescent substance abuse program services, and based on that experience results reveal that many teenagers abusing substances are also struggling with unresolved traumatic stress and emotional issues, which frequently and directly contributes to their substance abuse. SHARP address's the deficit in traditional substance abuse programs that leave unresolved emotional, mental and traumatic stress issues unaddressed.
