Weekly Coaching Communication

Make it a great day -- every day!

14 - 22 December 2015

On the Standards Front . . .

Leadership for Continuous improvement (LCI) Series: For the third year of the LCI series, Rob Libolt, Mindy Meyne, and I represented the high school, along with Jennifer Burkhart. Our precious work in the LCI series consisted on learning more about assessments and competency/standards-based education. This year, we are learning more about leadership and how to bring stamina and fidelity to our initiatives.

"Evaluating Your Leadership Impact: Steve Ventura" (www.steveventura.com)This was the first of two sessions of professional learning led by Mr. Ventura @smventura. Brent Wintehof, Dilyn McNeill, and Libby Ridgeway represented the middle school. For the first time, the intermediate and primary buildings attended with us and were represented by principals and instructional coaches.

The day focused on three aspects:

  1. "Know thy impact" focused on Viviane Robinson, Margie Hohepa, Claire Lloyd's (2009) book School Leadership and Student Outcomes to discuss how a leadership team can make the greatest impact on student learning through resourcing strategically; ensuring an orderly and supportive environment; planning, coordinating, and evaluating teaching and the curriculum; promoting and participating in teacher learning and development; and establishing goals and expectations.
  2. "Inspired and Passionate Teachers" offered characteristics of inspired and passionate teachers and tools to use to monitor the impact of teachers. Ventura used John Hattie and Richard Jaeger's work to offer a lengthy description of the difference between "experienced" and "expert" teachers.
  3. "Effective Feedback" was the most critical (for me as an IC and teacher). "Effective feedback has the potential for a profound effect on student achievement. Effective feedback can double the speed of learning" (Ventura).

Before we attend Ventura's second session in February, we will be collecting some data and surveying/interviewing students.

If you have questions about Ventura's first session, please feel free to contact any of the LCI members.

Quotation of the Week . . .

As I close out the last of my weekly communication for the 2015 part of the school year, I cannot help but reflect on how lucky and blessed I am to be partnering with such great people to make learning better.

I'm truly grateful for the opportunities afforded to me in this position and as part of this staff. The conversations with you are always rich, and I hope I expand your thinking as much as you do mine.

It is my wish for you to find some academic rest over the holiday break and hope you wear yourselves out spending time with family and friends.

Best Wishes for a safe, peaceful and happy holiday season.
