Principal's Message

At the end of the month, we've set aside a few days when families will pick-up and exchange learning materials. This will be a very important pick-up for some. Here's why:

The oldest versions of our iPads are being replaced. We often refer to these as K2 iPads because the number on the back of the iPad begins with K2 (instead of CT). During the materials pick-up, those K2 student iPads will be returned to the school and students will receive a new iPad in return. Most of our kindergarten and first grade students have a K2 iPad, but all of you should check the back of your iPad because it's possible to have a K2 in any grade. We will send an email to the families of students who have an iPad that needs to be replaced. Please call us if you have any questions. Prior to returning the iPad, please make sure any personal projects you want to save are transferred to another device. If you need help, let us know.

Materials pick-up and the iPad exchange (ONLY for those with a K2 iPad) will take place on Tuesday, January 26 from 12:30 PM to 4:00 PM, Wednesday, January 27 from 12:30 PM to 5:00 PM and Thursday, January 28 from 12:30 PM to 4:00 PM. We will ask one adult to come from each family. Children will need to stay with their adult. All will need to wear masks and maintain social distancing. Please park and enter campus at the school office. Move west down the hallway toward the MPR. There, you will exchange any K2 iPads or move around to the north side of the MPR to pick up materials. Everyone will exit out the Yale gate in order to preserve a one-way flow of traffic. If you need to arrange to pick-up at a different time, please call the school office in advance at 909-398-0324.

Enrolling Now for After School Enrichment Classes

The Sycamore After School Enrichment Program provides an opportunity for students to explore varied interests. Classes are taught by talented individuals who are passionate about sharing their expertise with others. Classes this year will be live stream and vary by start date and by the number of weeks. Please make careful note of class meeting dates. As always, class fees are set by the instructors and are reflective of the length of the course, materials, and preparation.

Please find the registration information in the back of the ASE brochure. If you wish to register your child for a class, please complete the last 2 pages of this packet. You can either drop the registration and payment off in the school office Monday through Friday between the hours of 8:00-3:30 or you can email your registration packet and send your payment via Zelle at sycwaysmeans@gmail.com (please indicate that the payment is for ASE). Registration materials are due by Monday, January 18, 2021 and late enrollment will not be possible.

Once registration is confirmed, you will receive an email from the class instructor. This email will provide all information about joining the class. Keep in mind, these classes are not a part of Canvas. If you have any questions, please contact Tina Hensley at thensley@cusd.claremont.edu.

New: Lunch Bunch

We know students are really missing the social aspects of school. Our noon-time activities are one way we're attempting to offer some of that time back to our students. Beginning this Friday, a team of our Elementary Counseling Interns will lead a fun social activity/opportunity for students. On Fridays from 12:30 to 1:00 PM, students can join to connect with others and engage in social-emotional activities. Students in grades K-6 are welcome to join. The lunch bunch is made available through the Elementary Chill Out Canvas Course. A link to the Lunch Bunch is there. A button with the meeting number and passcode is also available on our Sycamore Student page.

Claremont's "Making Change" Contest

For the past thirty years, the City of Claremont and CUSD have sponsored an annual “Making Change” contest to recognize champions of human rights and social justice. This activity provides students with an opportunity to reflect on individuals who have taken action to improve the world around them. A flyer has been posted on Peachjar. It provides detail for participants at each grade level. In this 31st year, entries will be submitted digitally. The due date is February 5.

Publishing House Speaker Series

This week's Publishing House Speaker, Sandie Sonke, is a Southern California native with a degree in studio art from California State University Fullerton. She is a fan of coffee and cooking, and among the many hats she wears, her favorite role is being a mom of two. Sandie has published several children’s books, including, Yoga Magic, The Day Punctuation Came to Town, and Scarlet’s Magic Paintbrush. You can also find more of her freelance illustration work at www.sandiesonkeillustration.com. Speaking will be followed by a Q&A session where students can ask questions. Since it is around lunch time, please feel free to nibble and zoom. Join us at 11:30 am on Wednesday. The Zoom link is available on the “Sycamore Students” Publishing House Canvas page.

Kindergarten Open House

Believe it or not, we are already thinking about the kindergarten class of 2021. As is practice every year, each of our elementary schools will offer families an "open house" designed to provide an overview of their school. This year, those meetings will be held on Zoom. If you or someone you know has a kindergartener, a child who will be five by September 1 of this year, encourage them to attend. Sycamore's Kindergarten Open House will be held on January 21 at 10:30 AM. The schedule for other schools and their dates for kindergarten registration are posted on the Student Services page of the District website.

Community Forum: Racial Equity in CUSD

The district will be hosting a community forum on the topic of racial equity. This event is designed to include community voice as the district works to understand equity and address the challenges and impact of institutional racism within CUSD. The meeting will be held virtually on February 3 from 6:00-8:00 PM. See the flyer for details on the event and how to register.

Preparing Outdoor Learning Spaces

As we heard in recent letters from in Dr. Olesniewicz, we do not expect to meet the community health requirements for Phase 2 learning February. Still, we continue to plan for the possibility of a safe return to in-school learning. You may have noticed we are in the process of installing a new trellis near the library. This structure, paid for by emergency COVID funds, will provide shade for outdoor learning upon our return. We have also purchased additional tables for outdoor work spaces. If you have questions about Dr. Olesniewicz's letter or our site plans, please contact Mrs. Stanger.
