Map Scores are in
Did you know?
- Most schools administer MAP Growth three times per year – in fall, winter, and spring.
- As the student answers correctly, questions get harder. If the student answers incorrectly, the questions get easier. By the end of the test, students will have answered enough questions to inform a teacher about what they know and what they’re ready to learn.
- MAP Growth is grade independent, which means teachers and parents can see where a child is performing relative to grade level – not merely if they are at grade level or not.
- MAP Growth assesses math, reading, language usage, and science.
- MAP Growth takes less than an hour to complete – but is not timed. Students can take as much time as needed.
- The score your child receives is called a RIT score. You’ll be able to see your child’s RIT score progress from test to test, and year to year.
- The RIT score can be connected to online resources, such as Khan Academy for math exercises and YourReadingPath.com to determine what books might be at the appropriate reading level. You can even plug their RIT score into our College Explorer tool to see what colleges your child is on track to attend.

AFLs - So Very Important
Formative assessments assess not only if the student is learning the objective but also the effectiveness of the lesson. Using AFLs in every lesson ensures that deficits are "caught" early and changes to Tier 1 lesson presentation are made.
Examples of AFLs:
Round Robin Charts
This strategy involves passing charts among groups to assess understanding. Each group of 4 or 5 students begins with a chart and some markers. The group records an answer to an open-ended question. They can also share knowledge they have on a topic covered in class. Once the students finish with the chart, they pass it on to the next group. Once every group has worked on every chart, responses are discussed as a class.
3–2–1 Countdown
This is a true test of relevant and meaningful learning. When students learn something they find useful, they’re likely to want to use that learning in some way. Have students end the day with this one. Give them cards to write on, or they can respond orally. They are required to respond to three separate statements:
- 3 things you didn’t know before
- 2 things that surprised you about this topic
- 1 thing you want to start doing with what you’ve learned
Classroom Polls
Polls let students give responses quickly and accurately. A silent poll is perfect for those “shy” students who have trouble speaking up. These are also a quick way to check understanding using mobile technology. Try tools like Poll Everywhere or SurveyPlanet.

ISTE Standards make their way into Texas law
ISTE = International Society of Technology Educators
In 2017, the governor of Texas signed a bill requiring that preservice teachers be evaluated on their ability to teach in a digital environment, with the [ISTE] Educator Standards serving as the benchmark.
The June passage of Senate Bill 1839 made Texas the first state to include the Educator Standards in legislation.
SB 1839 also empowers the Texas State Board for Educator Certification (SBEC) to create rules governing the creation of continuing professional education courses for in-service educators to learn more about digital learning, and provides guidance on what digital learning means and how it can empower teachers to bring a more robust, complete and up-to-date educational experience to classrooms.

Region 11 Fall Training Catalog
Education Service Center Region 11 is excited to release our FALL 2018 Course Catalog of learning experiences for teachers, administrators, support staff, school board members, and auxiliary staff. This robust catalog includes opportunities that are of particular benefit for LEAs that recently partnered with us by selecting our new “Instructional Solutions & Support” (ISS) contract.
Each session listed in the publication indicates if it is free of charge for all participants, if there is a registration fee associated with the event, or if the session is free for participants from districts with the ISS contract.
We will be updating sessions to the catalog periodically as new offerings are developed. We are also planning to publish a Spring and Summer edition of the catalog so that you will always have a comprehensive list of PD offerings at your fingertips.
