A NOTE FROM THE PRINCIPAL

August 26, 2022

Hello Mustang Families!

Thank you all for a wonderful first week of school. It has been exciting to see all of our new and returning students' faces back on the campus. We appreciate your support and are ready to provide high-quality STEAM instruction to all of our students. Thank you for your patience with arrival and dismissal. For our returning families, arrival and dismissal is taking a little longer than last year due to us having more students on campus. Please continue to be patient as we get faster each day.

As a reminder, our campus is a uniform campus. ALL students are to be in the correct school uniform each day. Khaki bottoms are our only allowed bottoms, not blue or black. Jeans are not allowed on Friday unless an announcement is made for a special dress day event. Masks will continue to be optional in accordance with district protocols. We are looking forward to another great week at Marsalis before we head into Labor Day Weekend! Please let us know if you have any questions.

WOODS' WORDS OF WISDOM

Mustang Parents:

Welcome to Marsalis! I am excited about this school year and am enjoying meeting all of our new and returning students and families. In the first weeks of the school year, I am focused solely on student safety. In my observations over these first two weeks, I want to remind everyone of the following:

- Please follow the school zone speed limits when traveling Marsalis Avenue in front of our campus.

- Please follow our crossing guard's directions and allow her to escort your child safety across our main streets.

- Please refrain from turning around in the middle of the street to ensure that no child is injured when they are getting dropped off or picked up.

Lastly, Scottsboro Drive is our bus zone area and is also a ONE-WAY street during school hours. We are requesting that you do not double-park in our loading zone areas or obstruct our buses ability to exit the campus safely in the afternoons.

MARSALIS ARRIVAL AND DISMISSAL REMINDERS

Arrival Reminders

- Our school opens at 7:30 a.m. Only bus riders and PK3 students need to enter at the Scottsboro (bus lane) door. All other students must enter at the front entrance.

- School begins at 8:00 a.m. and a student is tardy at 8:15 a.m. Recording of tardies will begin this week and can affect your child's overall attendance.

- Students begin picking up breakfast from the cafeteria with their teachers at 7:45 a.m. and eat in their classrooms. Breakfast concludes at 8:15 a.m. All students who arrive after this time will miss the breakfast period.

Dismissal Reminders

- Dismissal begins at 3:15 p.m. If you would like to pick your child up early, they will need to be picked up prior to 2:45 p.m. Please understand that your child will be missing valuable instruction and parent conferences will be held for students who have frequent early releases.

- If your child is a bus rider or is being picked up by a daycare facility, please be sure to notify your child's teacher.

PARENT PICKUP PROCEDURES

- All persons picking up students will need to have photo ID ready to show. Our scholars will only be released to the persons listed on their enrollment history. If you need to update this information, please contact Mrs. Garcia, CRC, at 972-749-3512.

DISD Attendance Agreements

All students will receive the 2022-2023 Dallas ISD Attendance Agreement forms on Monday, August 29, 2022. Please ensure you read the agreement, sign it and return it to your child's teacher.

BUS SAFETY REMINDERS

Parents,

Please share with your child(ren) the importance of bus safety. Students are to wear seatbelts, if applicable, obey the bus drivers' directives, keep their hands and belongings to themselves and most importantly, stay seated while on the bus. Parents, also remember to be at the appropriate bus pickup locations on time. Our bus drivers routes do not service Marsalis only and must stay on schedule.

GETTING PREPARED FOR HIGH-QUALITY LEARNING

  • Help your child be ready for learning each day by ensuring their mornings are calm and full of positive conversations about how amazing their day will be.
  • Provide breakfast or make sure they arrive in time to receive breakfast. It's the most important meal of the day!
  • Ensure they have their school tools: pencils, paper, journal (if needed), technology device, and their optional face masks for safety.
  • Be sure to ask your child what they learned everyday and review the teacher's Google site for more information. Communicate with your child's teachers regarding any questions you may have about assignments.
  • Keep the learning going at home!

STAY CONNECTED TO YOUR CHILD'S TEACHER(S)

- Make sure to download the Class DoJo app to your phones or other technology devices and join your child's class to receive real-time communication and alerts with your child's teachers.

- Check out our school website (www.dallasisd.org/marsalis) for our teachers' Google sites, beginning September 6. These sites will provide you with specific information and resources for your child's specific grade level. Click on our "Academics" tab and select "Grade Level Classes" to locate the teachers' pages.

COUNSELOR'S CORNER

Meet our counselor, Ms. Telisa Ingram. Visit her counseling website at

One of our STEAM Academy commitments is to the social and emotional learning of our students. Each morning our students participate in a "SEL MEET UP" with their homeroom teachers and fellow classmates. This daily activity is the building block for our classroom communities.

Our SEL focus for August includes:

1) Demonstrating an awareness of one's emotions, thoughts, and values

2) Considering the well-being and safety of self and others when making decisions
