Benton Weekly Update

Week 29: March 22-26, 2021

Looking Ahead to 21-22!

Now that we've hit the three-quarter mark on this school year, we are looking forward to the 21-22 School Year. Soon, 6th and 7th Grade students will be selecting their courses for next year in PowerSchool. Right now, 5th, 6th, and 7th grade students will complete the Course Request Worksheet for next year's classes. This worksheet will help students determine their choices for next year.

Yearbooks are now on Sale for $20, and we are soliciting pictures from YOU of learning at home. See below for more information.

Students continue to participate in Digital Citizenship lessons on Wednesdays. With so much of our lives being conducted online, it is important for students to understand how to navigate safely in a digital world. Ask your child about what they are learning and take this opportunity as a family to decide how you will help them safely interact online.

Women's History Month: Augusta Savage, Sculptor

A trailblazing sculptor associated with the Harlem Renaissance, Augusta Savage was also an influential teacher and activist, advocating for equal rights for African-Americans in the arts.

Born near Jacksonville, Florida, Savage moved to New York City in 1921 to study art at Cooper Union, beating out 142 men on the waiting list for her spot at the college. In 1923, Savage applied for a summer art program sponsored by the French government but was ultimately rejected because of her race. Thus began her lifelong fight to democratize and equalize the arts. One of her first commissions, a bust of W. E. B. DuBois for the Harlem Library, was well-received, and Savage proceeded to sculpt other African-American leaders, including Marcus Garvey and William Pickens Sr.

In 1929, her sculpture of a child from Harlem, Gamin, earned her widespread recognition and helped her secure a scholarship to study at the Academie de la Grande Chaumiere located in Paris, where she exhibited her work and won numerous awards. Savage returned to the United States in 1931 and launched the Savage Studio of Arts and Crafts, which became the Harlem Community Art Center, in 1932. Two years later, she became the first African-American artist to be elected to the National Association of Women Painters and Sculptors. For the rest of her life, the artist continued to create groundbreaking work—she was one of four women to receive a commission from the 1939 World’s Fair—and dedicated her time to teaching art to those around her.

Spotlight on Learning: Beginning Photography

Photography students are learning to create photographs using an unusual point of view, either worm's eye, bird's eye, or macro. Here are a few examples of our talented Benton students' photographs.

Spotlight on Clubs: The Diversity Club

The Diversity Club has been working on a PPT for Women's History Month. The students have been researching notable women and creating a slide. Though still a work in progress, you can see their Women's History Month Presentation here.
