SIG @ Bryn Mawr

News and views from our first week

what a week it's been!

Dear Parents,

Welcome to Summer Institute for the Gifted at Bryn Mawr!

We are all getting settled into our routines and getting to know each other. The first day of classes was filled with excitement and all of the students began working on their academic objectives with their instructors.

Here are some highlights from courses this week:

In SIG Monopoly: Money in the game of life, students were given a faux $1000 check and had to budget those funds as they planned a beach getaway.

In Chemistry: the Essential Element, our students really enjoyed the lab activity. They explored hydrophilic and hydrophobic properties by tye-dying milk and soap.

In Digital Photography, students have been venturing outside to find letters in objects around campus and using photoshop to compile the photos into words

In Online Design: Untangling the Web, students designed their own mini websites based on their favorite books.

We look forward to sharing more news from our classes over the next three weeks! Please contact our office if you have any questions about what's happening at Bryn Mawr in the days ahead. The director and deans would be happy to answer your questions and fill you in on your camper's experience.

The Funs begins with our evening program

We spent our first evening at SIG Bryn Mawr coming up with names, banners, and rules for each counselor group. This was an awesome way for the students to get to know each other, build the group identity, and come up with rules unique to their groups.

Some highlights were:
The Campus Queens are our 13 and 14 year old ladies here at Bryn Mawr and they "Rule with knowledge, class, and sass."
Our 9 and 10 year old ladies are the Awesome Pandas and their slogan is "Stay Smart and be empowering!"
The 11 and 12 year old boys are Dan's Bearded Squirrels and they "Believe in the impossible."
The Big Men on Campus are the 13 and 14 year old boys and their slogan is "Though we are few, we are powerful."

weekend getaways

We're gearing up for our first weekend getaway trip to Philadelphia. We will first be headed to the Academy of Natural Sciences of Drexel University. This is America's oldest natural history museum and a world leader in biodiversity and environmental research. We will have an opportunity to explore the remarkable diversity of our natural world through over 18 million specimens. We will then head to the King of Prussia Mall, one of the largest malls in the United States. We will eat lunch together in the food court and then spend a relaxing afternoon shopping.

SIG wishes a happy birthday to our all our campers who celebrated this week:

Austin Zhuang, Summer Faliero, and Andrew Brose
