Friday Family Message
Hello Families
Ballots containing Proposition 1, the school district’s Replacement Levy, are landing in mailboxes.
As with all elections, we encourage you to make your voice known and complete your ballot. If there are questions about our levy, please click here for all the information we have provided over the past few months.
This week also marks the end of the first semester of the school year. It is hard to believe that we are at the halfway point!
We encourage you to keep in regular contact with your child’s school and teacher(s). It is our aim to support your students academically and socially between now and June.
No school Tuesday, Jan. 30
This is a friendly reminder that there will be no school on Tuesday, Jan. 30, as our dedicated teachers will be participating in a professional development in-service day.
This day is crucial for our educators to enhance their skills, collaborate, and bring new insights to the classroom. We appreciate your understanding and support in providing our teachers with this valuable opportunity for continuous learning.
Emergency substitutes needed
The district typically hosts one “emergency substitute” training per year in the fall. However, our need for teaching substitutes is increasing, and we are preparing to host an additional training in February or March.
Please complete this form if you would like to be notified if we begin accepting applications for emergency substitute teachers.
What is an "emergency substitute"?
Substitute teachers need required certification in Washington state. However, when a school district doesn't have enough certified substitutes, it has the option to widen its search to other candidates, who can apply to get an emergency substitute teaching certificate.
To qualify as an "emergency substitute," you do not need to have completed a teacher education preparation program or certification exams — but you must have a minimum of a bachelor's degree (in any subject).
Bus drivers needed, too!
We are hiring for substitute bus drivers. This job offer flexible hours and shifts that are perfect for stay-at-home parents or retirees.
Anyone interested can visit www.stanwood.wednet.edu/JOBS to learn more and to apply!
SHS students building tiny homes
A big project is underway at Stanwood High School!
On behalf of the Low Income Housing Institute (LIHI), Lowes recently delivered lumber and other building materials to SHS's Career & Technical Education Program.
Students in the program's Construction Geometry course will use these materials to build four tiny houses for LIHI. This partnership allows our students to apply and develop their geometry and construction skills in a real life, hands-on environment.
Upon completion of the tiny houses, LIHI will transport them to a Tiny House Village in Western Washington to help people in need in our region.
Be safe in early morning darkness
Please be cautious before and after school as bus stops and walking routes can be dark and difficult to see students.
School district Transportation officials urge families to consider using a flashlight at a bus stop or wearing reflective tape.
Students should wait a few steps back from the road but remain visible at the bus stop. Please do not wait inside nearby houses.
SHS ag mechanics team earns honors
A round of applause for the Stanwood High ag mechanics team, who captured second place in a 12-school competition of skills on Jan. 22.
The competition covered several skills and abilities being taught in our schools, including Arc Welding, Land Measurement, Sprayer Calibration, Sprayer Parts Identification, Pesticide Label Reading, Electric Motor Wiring & Nameplate Reading, and a knowledge test.
Stanwood High student Jesson Jacobson earned second place overall as an individual in the contest. Callum Russell took 11th place.
Congratulations to our December Employees of the Month!
Stanwood High School teacher Michael Randall earned the Certificated Employee of the Month award. He was nominated by a student for going above and beyond, taking time to explain things in different ways so that all students can understand. Congrats!
Kristal Gollihar, our transportation dispatcher and a bus driver, was honored as the Classified Employee of the Month. She was nominated by several people who want to acknowledge her countless hours of work and volunteering at events such as the fair, food drives, and more. “She is always available with a smile and a positive attitude,” one nomination stated.
