Weekly Newsletter
This week, I am so excited and honored to shine the spotlight on our El Camino School Community Advisory, Mrs. Gabriela Hooshmand!
Mrs. Hooshmand, or Ms. Gaby, as we all call her, is one of the MOST valuable members of our Wildcat family. Although her official title is that of School Community Advisor II, she takes care of so many other things. She is an amazing team player that will always say yes to any of the requests that come her way. Her main role is to be a connection between our Spanish-speaking families and our staff. She schedules and translates in IEPs, 504s, parent-teacher meetings/conferences.
In addition to translation and interpretation services, she also helps with the many compliance procedures in the English Learner (EL) Program, keeping accurate records for EL students, coordinating and testing EL students when they enroll at our school, as well spring testing; keeping track of our Reclassified students, etc, etc, etc.
The above is but a very small sample of her daily routines. In addition to this, she is also an active member in the community and has been involved with the Mana North County San Diego Association for over a decade. It is through Mana that she brings the Hermanitas program once per week empowering our Latina young ladies with leadership skills.
“Ms. Gaby is the person I rely on all the time. Without her, I would not be able to complete many of the responsibilities I am tasked with. She is my right hand woman...actually, she is also my left hand, my right foot, my left foot…” Mrs. Higareda de Ochoa
Thank you, Ms. Gaby for ALL that you do!!
6-week Progress Report
Your child’s 6-week Progress Report should be coming in the mail this week. Please take a moment to review your child’s grades and speak with them about their current progress. If you don’t receive the Progress Report, please go on Aeries to double check your mailing address. If you have any questions regarding your student’s grades or attendance, please be sure to contact the teacher as they will be able to give you firsthand information regarding your student’s progress.

News for the Week...
- Independent Study Contracts: Parents and guardians, if your student is going to be out of school for more than four days due to quarantine because of close contact status or in isolation due to testing POSITIVE for Covid-19, there is a short-term independent study option in place to support continued learning. Students who need to quarantine will be offered short-term independent study so they can maintain academic readiness. Please ensure that your child completes the work from the Independent Study Contract that is emailed to you and your student. There is a place for parent/guardian signature and your student should ensure all work assigned in the IS contract is completed prior to returning to school.
- Renaissance STAR: Recently, your students took the Renaissance STAR Assessments in Math and English (Reading). The Star Assessments are short tests that provide teachers with learning data. Star tests are computer adaptive, which means they adjust to each answer your child provides. Students will take the STAR Assessments three times a year to show their progress and growth throughout the school year and assist in preparing for the CAASPP assessments. If you are interested in receiving STAR Assessment reports, parents can sign up to receive future emails from Renaissance when students take the assessment.
- PSAT Day - October 13: On Wednesday, October 13th, we will host the annual PSAT day on site. PSAT test day is a valuable experience -- students get to see what the standardized-test process is like, without worrying about the high stakes of an SAT or ACT exam. For juniors, the PSAT isn’t just a practice test. Students’ scores can turn into real money for college, thanks to the exam’s dual role as the National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. National Merit provides more than $40 million in scholarships each year, and the PSAT is the only way students can enter the competition. It’s a tough field -- last year, around 15,000 of the 1.5 million test-takers were named finalists -- but National Merit Scholarships range from one-time $2,500 awards all the way up to college- or corporate-sponsored full-tuition scholarships.
