Distillation

The Process of Distillation

What is Distillation?

It is when the substance to be separated have different boiling points. Although the term is most commonly applied to liquids, the reverse process can be used to separate gases by liquefying components using changes in temperature and/or pressure.

The Steps Involved

1. the dirty water is heated

2. to the boiling point and thus vaporizes

3. (becomes steam), while other substances remain in solid state, in boiler. Steam is then

directed into a cooler

4. where it cools down and returns to liquid water

5. and the end result is a water, purified of additional substances found in it before distillation.
