A Message from Dr. Bearden...
Wow, what a busy week as far as information about metro schools has been on/in everyone's minds and/or conversations. I have a summary prepared for you now that we have all heard Dr. Looney's presentation/update for the FCS Board members. However, understanding that the summary is focused on remote learning and the details of that option. As we get closer to being able to phase back to face-2-face safely, I will provide indepth communication around the details of the reopening matrix in advance of each phase as applicable. I appreciate so much the grace and patience given by you as we are all sifting through a ton of information.
As you can guess, I am fielding a lot of questions. I want to share one questions that I was asked this week: "without overthinking, if you could pick 3 words to describe how you are feeling today, what would they be?" I answered without hesitation: "Stop, Drop, and Roll". My friend looked confused and you may have thought "ummm what?". If you will indulge me to explain.
- STOP: For me, there's so much information and/or changing information coming from all directions! My tendency is towards "Expecting the Best but have a contingency plan for every other scenario. To be well planned, I seek out information and depend on communication from a variety of sources. Honestly, I am feeling information overload and want it to stop!
- DROP: This one is simple. I just really really want the COVID positive diagnoses to DROP and for this pandemic to be a part of our yesterday, not our present and/or future. I am blessed to say that no one in my immediate family has tested positive. However, I know lots of other people who have been directly impacted by COVID and my heart is breaking for them.
-
- ROLL: Well, ROLL WITH IT would be more accurate! I am not much on negativity and/or negative emotions! My grandmother was a wonderful person and she had a proverbial statement for just about every situation. Here's one that has been my mantra. "When you don't like something outside of your control, you only have two choices: Be Bitter or Be Better!" Well, I don't like a lot of the changes that the pandemic has brought into my reality...and, I especially don't like the impact to school starting back. But, dwelling in the thoughts of what I don't like would likely make me bitter and I don't prefer "bitter" in people or in myself! Therefore, according to grandmama, I am choosing to get better. I am not going to dwell in the bitter of what I cannot control but roll with and do better with what I can!
What would your three words be? As you are sorting through a ton information from a wide circle of sources and making decisions regarding the start of school. I hope you will join me in focusing on remote learning and how SHE will embrace the better! Your teachers are already working on remote learning lessons, planning units, and ensuring that the temporary period of remote learning will be better for all involved. Because, quite frankly, we do what is best for students!
Just below my message, I have outlined how we will start school on August 17th for PK thru 5. If you need clarity about anything you hear (regardless of the source), please reach out and ask me.
