January Newsletter
Message From Dr. Andrews
Dear Peine Ridge Community,
Hello! With the start of the New Year we often face the pressure of making resolutions. Each year I have the intent to eat better and to exercise more only for it to dwindle away the deeper I get into the year. What I really need to do is write down my goals and to post them in different areas so I don’t lose focus. I should also let my family and friends know my goals as well. The constant reminders and support from others would be motivating.
As your children enter the New Year it would be a great idea to sit down with them to come up with some goals. The goals can be school related or goals towards their personal activities and home life. Work with them on making their goals follow the SMART goal approach.
Specific
Measurable
Achievable
Relevant
Time bound
After they set their goals be there to support them and to help them achieve. Once they achieve their goal it is important to celebrate their success. The celebration is what will motivate them to set even more goals.
If your child does set a goal, have them share their goals with me when they see me out and about. You could even have them hand me their goals and how they plan to celebrate reaching them. I will work to also remind them what they are working towards when I see them and over the announcements. When we return I will share a few of my goals with the students as well.
Have a great New Year!
Dr. Ryan Andrews
PBIS Talk
Why is it so important to focus on teaching positive social behaviors? Often, the question is asked, "Why should do you have to teach kids to be good? They already know what they are supposed to do. Why don't we just expect good behavior?" In the past, schoolwide discipline has focused mainly on reacting to specific student misbehavior by implementing punishment-based strategies including reprimands, loss of privileges, office referrals, suspensions, and expulsions. Research has shown that the implementation of punishment, especially when it is used inconsistently and in the absence of other positive strategies, is ineffective. Introducing, modeling, and reinforcing positive social behavior is an important step of a student's educational experience. Teaching behavioral expectations and rewarding students for following them is a much more positive approach than waiting for misbehavior to occur before responding. The purpose of schoolwide PBIS is to establish a climate in which appropriate behavior is the norm. Source: https://www.pbis.org/school In December, the weekly PBIS classroom lessons focused on Generosity. Students and staff discussed what it means to give with your heart and time. Students learned that you don't need money to give. Another lesson focused on how to show gratitude for all gifts, no matter how big or small. Students and staff will also be reviewing Party Expectations (in anticipation of our Holiday Parties), greetings, and manners. Students of the Month: Each grade level will be choosing one student, who displays the BIG 3 and Panther Pride every day, to be the Student of the Month. Students will have their photo and short blurb from his or her teacher displayed in the hallway for the month. Peine Ridge Science Fair
The science fair is scheduled for February 7 and 8, 2018. The purpose of the Science Fair is to promote individual study, initiative, and achievement. Students are expected to assume as much responsibility for the project as possible.
Projects will be judged in the following categories:
- Topic (is it creative, interesting, and age appropriate)
- Appearance of display (attractive and neat)
- Scientific presentation (problem, hypothesis, procedures, results, and conclusion)
- Grammar, punctuation, and spelling
To make Science Fair projects easier to complete, we will be selling display boards for $5.50 in room C17. These boards meet Regional Fair requirements and are easy to assemble. The project boards will not be required for the displays or collections that are not judged.
If you would like your child to participate and need an information booklet of rules and instructions, please fill out a registration form and return it to your child's teacher.
