Hembree Highlights
October 30, 2020
Note from Mrs. Smith
2020 has been full of surprises and many of them not the fun kind. However, we are making it through every twist and turn together. I recognize that this week has been hard for a variety of reasons. That is why my closing words in each weekly letter has never changed: Stay Strong, Stay Positive, Stay Well. Those words continue to be appropriate for this past week too!
We have had an influx of students enrolling in remote learning, opting out of F2F instruction. This is something any parent can do at any time. Due to our higher numbers, we have moved to 1 teacher per grade level for remote learning. This change will begin on November 4th to give us time for communication and planning.
Kindergarten: Lisa Brinkley - brinkleylg1@fultonschools.org
First Grade: Brenda Taylor - taylorb2@fultonschools.org
Second Grade: Chandra Stevens - stevensc@fultonschools.org
Third Grade: Lisa Tejada - tejada@fultonschools.org
Fourth Grade: Michell Philpott - philpottm1@fultonschools.org
Fifth Grade: Emily Currier - currier@fultonschools.org
If your child is currently in Ms. Philpott's or Mrs. Steven's homerooms, you will be contacted on Monday via phone and email with specifics about your child's new homeroom. We had hoped to be able to do this today, but the weather did not play nice with our plans.
We will be hosting remote learning, 2nd grade, and 4th grade meet and greet meetings on Tuesday, November 3 at 9 am. This will be held virtually and those links will be shared on Monday. We want to make sure your child is ready for their new teacher starting on November 4th.
If your child is currently in F2F model, but you would like them to start attending school virtually, please click on the following link: CLICK HERE. This will help us better track and communicate with you in a timely manner about next steps.
Lastly, Tuesday is election day and there will be no students or teachers in the building that day. We will block off all school areas except for the cafe. We also received new equipment on Tuesday to disinfect the entire cafe at the conclusion of the election. We will NOT be eating in the cafe on Wednesday for breakfast or lunch. We are taking an additional step of cleaning prior to student using the cafeteria. I have been advised that this is an unnecessary step, but I feel like we must go above and beyond in our cleaning practices because our students and staff deserve that. Please know that we take cleanliness very seriously! We are doing everything that we can to keep your child safe while at school.
In conclusion, I know that many of you still do not have power. Please reach out if you need anything. We take care of each other. I have seen that in canvasing our neighborhoods today and yesterday. I saw neighbors coming together to clear out debris. That is just who we are. So please let us know if you need anything.
Have a great weekend!
Stay Strong! Stay Positive! Stay Well!
Sincerely,
AJ Smith

Title 1 Designation Update:
Today was the last day to apply for the Free/Reduced Lunch program. We have preliminary data that indicates that we should make our needed numbers. I will communicate the final designation as soon as I receive it.
Thank you for you taking this seriously and completing the needed paper to help us secure the funding needed for our Hawks!
Starting our Strong 4 Life Challenge
Ms. Marzetti has already created a bulletin board showing how much sugar is in different drinks from milk to coke. There is NO sugar in water, and we want to encourage our students to drink water throughout the day. This is especially true with all of the mask wearing that we are doing right now.
Please check out the video below as an introduction to our partnership with Children's Healthcare of Atlanta to lead this work on healthy habits for our students. The blue button below the video will also take you to the website that is full of resources about the program and healthy living.

From Our PTA
Now more than ever, we need your help! Our students, teachers, staff, parents, and community are facing unprecedented challenges this year. We can really use your support through donations to the Annual Fund. Donate on Member Hub today!
Where do your Annual Fund dollars go? Your donations are used for student enrichment, staff support, community connections, family engagement programs and COVID-19 related needs. An example is the teacher grant program, including one this year to set up an outdoor classroom-type space, or providing additional school supplies since students can no longer share materials due to COVID-19.
Any amount is welcome and appreciated – without your contributions these programs cannot continue. HSES PTA is a 501c(3) non-profit organization, and your donation could be doubled – click here to see how to get your company to match your donation to Hembree Springs!!
Thank you for your support!
