What will it cost?
FEE $400
What does the fee cover?
Air and Ground Transportation: In Alaska, we will be using rented vehicles driven by SAC Faculty members. Flights between LAX and FAI will be on Delta, layovers are in Seattle.
Housing: You will be staying in dorms, double occupancy (same gender).
Food: Is provided! Three meals each day are provided July 31-Aug 3. You are responsible for your meals on travel days, as well as any snacks or drinks outside of meals.
Activities: All activities are included! Students are expected to attend all scheduled activities, including pre-trip and post trip meetings (Dates and times to be determined. See the sample itinerary.
Pre-Trip Meeting
- TBA: Trip overview. Packing list. Meet your fellow travelers. Meet your faculty escorts; Learn how to pack one week of clothing in a carry on bag; Get your transcripts! Get reminded to bring DEET and Benydryl cream
Post-Trip Meeting.
- Aug (TBD w/in 10 days of return)- Complete paperwork and debriefing. Compare remaining mosquito bites, photos, pizza.
What is not provided? Food on travel days, snacks. Spending money. Optional activities. Tips for tour guides.
Is the deposit refundable? Deposits are fully refundable until May 29. Between May 30 and July 25 any penalties imposed for reservation changes or cancellations will be passed on to the student. After July 25, 2018 no fees will be returned.

Who is Eligible?
This trip is funded through a Student Equity Grant. Student Equity is a state-funded effort to improve student success outcomes for all students. This trip is designed for sophomore level students interested in transfer to to a four year institution after completing the fire academy.
To be eligible for this trip, students must meet the following requirements.
Be a current or continuing SAC Fire Technology undergraduate students in good standing, seeking a career as a firefighter. Priority is given to student that have completed 15 or more units at SAC.
Students that have already obtained a BA/BS degree may be considered for the trip, but must complete the supplemental reservation form.
Students that do not meet the above criteria, but are close, may be put on a wait list. Students on the wait list that are closest to meeting the requirements for this trip, will have the opportunity to book any openings that are not filled after May 10.
Student that do not meet the above criteria but would like to attend and are willing to pay for the entire trip in full, should contact Professor Freeman at 714-564-6860.

Other things you should know...
All students are required to attend a pre and post trip meeting at Santa Ana College and submit a trip report as requested.
The trip is limited to 15 students. Students will be accompanied by three faculty members:
- Suzanne Freeman, Professor Fire Technology
- Kris Ross, Professor Fire Technology
- Pat Dibb, Professor, EMT
Trip Composition
Our trip is built around the Core Themes and Key Messages of UAF:
- Learn about the degree programs and educational opportunities available at UAF.
- Attend sample courses and information sessions offered by the Homeland Security & Emergency Management Program; the Paramedicine and Fire Academy Programs and the Department of Recreation, Adventure and Wellness.
Research: UAF is a national and world leader in climate change and arctic research.
- Learn about the variety of research projects the school is involved with.
- Visit the Geophysical Institute, a Large Animal Research Project, and take a behind the scenes tour of the Museum of the North.
Prepare: UAF offers everything from workforce development and vocational programs to master’s degrees and PhDs.
- Students have the opportunity to use the firefighting skills learned at SAC to get a Bachelor's degree, Master's degree or Paramedic certification while gaining experience working as a full-time paid Firefighter/EMT.
- Visit local volunteer fire departments and learn about their live-in work/study programs. (Not paid, but they reimburse you for your educational costs and provide room and board).
- Spend an evening at a fire station.

Engage: The best part of UAF is it's location. Location defines UAF and provides students with opportunities for transformational experiences. The Alaska lifestyle is woven into the UAF experience.
- Learn about the history, culture and environment of Fairbanks.
- Visit the Morris Thompson Cultural Center take a hike in a migratory bird refuge, and bowl a few games at the local bowling alley.
- Drive out to Chena Hotsprings for a lesson in geothermal renewable energy and a tour of a musher's dog kennel. Take a swim in Chena Hot Springs Lake.
- For an additional fee you can go horseback riding, take a guided ATV tour or rent a bike.
