SLPHS families,
Welcome back from fall break. We appreciated the opportunities we had to connect and conference with families last week during the break and last evening. Our teachers are grateful for the conversations they have with you about your student’s learning and the ways we all support that learning together.
With our return from break, we enter the second half of the trimester. It will go fast. Please continue to reach out to your student’s teachers if you have any questions.
Next Thursday, November 3, 5-7 p.m. you are invited to our High School Curriculum Night. I encourage you to come by, meet teachers and learn more about the curriculum your student is engaging with and the student learning experience. While parents can access much of this information in Schoology, this event is designed to be more conversational and give you a greater understanding the content and experience.
Next week, our 9th graders also will participate in the 9th grade Respect Retreat. This is a full day of activities and guided discussion. The focus is on community building and recognizing the attributes of being a respectful, active and contributing member of our school community. Half the class will attend on Tuesday and half on Wednesday.
Finally, I am excited to invite all families to the first theater experience of the year. The high school fall play opens Friday – Peter and the Starcatcher – a prequel to Peter Pan. This will be another great production with so much student talent on display for our community. It’s also appropriate for younger siblings! Check out more information in the newsletter today.
One school, one community, #SLPPantherProud!

Industry Roundtable: Strengthening partnerships for students
More than 30 small and large business, non-profit, government and education leaders came together at Spring Lake Park High School October 13. The conversation focused on how we can continue to strengthen partnerships and provide opportunities that benefit all students, the workforce and our community.
Community and industry partners contribute to all three career pathways offered at Spring Lake Park High School – Business and Entrepreneurship, Health and Human Services and Technology, Engineering and Design. Each pathway represents a need for future jobs. At the high school, students can pick and choose courses across pathways or go deep in one area. Several courses offer college credit opportunities.
Community and industry partners serve as guest instructors, mentors, tour hosts at their workplaces and more. They connect learning to the real world and help students gain applicable skills for their future.
Lifesaving, real-world skills in action
When Rochelle Lavalle, junior at Spring Lake Park High School, noticed a young family member choking on his food, she sprang into action using knowledge from her First Aid/CPR class.
Rochelle describes eating dinner with her family recently when her cousin, who is a toddler, started choking on his food. “I sat there for only a second, debating if I needed to help,” says Rochelle. “Then it was getting worse, so I realized I needed to step in and do something.”
First Aid/CPR teacher, Jennifer Neiss, has been working in the Spring Lake Park Opportunities in Emergency Care (OEC) program for nine years. “We as staff members and adults know from experience that there is such immense value in our OEC classes,” says Jennifer. “For students, sometimes it’s not until they are faced with a real situation outside of school that they realize how important and useful these skills really are. They can be life-changing and lifesaving.”
Fire Truck donated to OEC program
A new truck has been added to the SLPOEC fleet – the first fire truck! A big thank you to SBM Fire for the donation and Chief Chad Martin for officially handing over the keys to OEC Instructors John Lindstrom and Bill Neiss.
