A glimpse of what our students are learning!
Social Studies
In 6th grade social studies we are studying Mesopotamia; the characteristics of a civilization, the definition of a city-state and the evolution of the “empire”; and Hammurabi’s law code.
7th Grade has traveled all the way back to Ancient Rome and learned about the lasting legacy of the Roman Empire. We have entered the Current Era now and are learning about the spread of Christianity, the Fall of Rome and the Byzantine (or Eastern Roman) Empire. We are making connections between civilizations and discussing the influence these great events have on our world today.
8th grade U.S. History has finished the colonial period as well as the events leading up to the cause of the revolutionary war, and we are now currently studying the Declaration of Independence, and the major events of the Revolutionary War.
English
Sixth-grade English classes are reading a variety of novels and focusing on using evidence to support claims as well as story structure.
Seventh-grade classes are also reading different novels, as well as diverse selections from MyPerspectives, and focusing on different writing genres including narrative, argument and poetry.
Eighth-grade English students are currently reading Animal Farm or The Outsiders, and some students have participated in their first Socratic Seminar. Students are focusing on narrative writing and persuasion.
Physical Education
6th/7th graders have been refining their throwing and catching technique and have gotten the opportunity to try out our activity room (traversing rock wall, climbing ropes, peg board and pull up bar). Fun times!
8th Grade is finishing up a leadership unit consisting of working together as a team to accomplish the goal while focusing on leadership skills. They got to walk across a ladder of bats (batty walk) and work together to solve a mission impossible with various equipment. They are now testing their skill related fitness by evaluating their speed, balance, reaction time, coordination, power, and agility.
Science
Students are working scientific method and a waves unit
Math
Math classes are solving multiple step equations with a partner. Students are working together to problem solve. Students are learning from one another and discussing the learning process with their groups.
