5th Grade Curriculum Highlights!

You are invited to attend Curriculum Night at Hemenway School on Thursday October 6th. This will be an open house event, taking place between 6:30 and 8:00 pm. Children should attend along with their families. You can visit our classroom, as well as other spaces in the school such as the art and music room.
Please read the information below to learn about 5th grade curriculum. During Curriculum Night, I will be in our classroom to answer any questions you might have about the expectations and learning activities your child will experience this year.
Nuts and Bolts of 5th Grade
School starts at 9:15, ends at 3:30
We have snack daily. Please send just 1 nut free item and water only.
Please have your child bring a reusable water bottle every day, labeled with their name.
We try to go out every day during recess. As the weather gets colder, please send your child with weather appropriate clothing.

Workshop Model
The workshop model follows the structure below:
- Mini Lesson- Teacher teaches a new strategy or skill to the whole class.
- Independent Time- Students are independently reading, writing or practicing math skills. During this time, teachers are meeting with students 1:1 and in small groups.
- Share- Students come back to the carpet and connect their learning to the daily objective.
Reader's Workshop
These skills are taught through the following units:
- Interpretation Book Clubs: Analyzing Theme
- Tackling Complexity: Moving up Levels of Nonfiction
- Social Issues Book Clubs
- Argument & Advocacy: Researching Debatable Issues
- Traditional Literature & Poetry
- Fantasy Book Clubs
Writer's Workshop
These skills are taught through the following units:
Narrative Craft
Informational Writing: Feature Articles on Topics of Personal Interest
Literary Essays
Research Based Argument Essays
Memoir Writing
Lens of History: Research Reports on Civil Rights
Phonics & Word Study
Students will be taught derivational patterns, grammar, and vocabulary that are integrated into Reader's and Writer's workshop and applied across all content areas.
The Word Study / Phonics blocks are a time where these skills can be intentionally introduced, developed, and reinforced, while being applied in authentic ways throughout the school day. With a dedicated focus on word study, we hope to see an increase in phonics, vocabulary, and comprehension that will better prepare students for middle school and beyond.
Math Workshop
Fifth graders will explore a variety of math topics throughout the school year. Students will learn important growth mindset messages that will help them feel confident, sustain their effort throughout the year, persist with open ended and difficult problems, and embrace mistakes and challenges. Throughout the year, students will engage in problem solving, partner activities, math games and use technology in order to practice math skills.
Our major categories of mathematics in fifth grade are:

Geometry, Measurement & Data
Science
The theme for 5th grade science is SYSTEMS. Students will use scientific practices for testing ideas they believe are important to their development of explanations and models.
This year's units of study for Science are below.
Social Studies
Building on their knowledge of North American geography and peoples, students learn more about the history of the colonies, the American Revolution, and the growth of our republic up through the Civil Rights Movement of the 20th century.
Social Emotional Learning
- Each month we have a character trait of the month. September's trait of the month is Responsibility and October is Respect.
- Students recite the Hemenway Core Values each morning. The Core Values are: Hemenway Tigers Respect Themselves/ Hemenway tigers Respect Others/Hemenway Tigers Respect Our School/Hemenway Tigers Persevere!
PBIS – Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports. Students can earn blue and orange paws for showing expected behaviors! There is an incentive to trade these paws in for rewards.
Social-Emotional Learning time each week: Zones of Regulation, Second Step, PBIS Lessons
Save the Date for Fall Conferences
We look forward to seeing you Thursday, October 6th at Curriculum Night! Since we will be unable to talk privately about your child at that time, please be sure to sign up for a future parent conference date. Fall conferences will take place on 10/13/22, 10/20/22, 10/27/22 and 11/10/22. Sign up opportunities will be available on Thursday night in person and through the Sign Up Genius website this week.
