what's coming up...

Science -

Science... We will continue to study earth science this month. We are finishing up our Sun, Moon and Earth unit and will move into Earth's Changes in the 4th six weeks.

Help needed: Mrs. Whitehurst could use paper towels in the science lab :)

Reading -

We will preparing for February CBA by studying Fig19D inference and proving evidence after reading through Fiction, Drama, and Expository text.

All reading responses - reading logs will be done in class every Thursday. There are no reading logs going home. I am requiring all scholars to extend their reading time to 30 minutes from where they are currently reading.

Reading tutorials are Monday and Thursday 3:45-4:30 only to scholars who received a notice that need help. All other scholars have tutoring during our WIN time each day.

Scholars are needing pencils, glue sticks, and highlighters for Reading. Many do not have these supplies.

Social Studies/ELA -

Social Studies... We will be diving into the Civil War and what a negative impact slavery had on our nation.

Writing... tackling the middle of the year writing assessment

Math -

We are bringing Algebra into the equation *no pun intended* as we close out the third six weeks and begin the fourth six weeks! We are on to additive and multiplicative patterns and translating a variety of graphs. BLACKOUTS have begun and we are rocking into the new year with our mathematical ability!

Math tutorials are Tuesday & Wednesday 3:30-4:15 p.m. by invitation and when scholars have trouble in particular skills. Our new schedule is involving math WIN and reading WIN time everyday. This is wonderful because of the fact that students are able to get extra assistance and work in both topics daily.

· We are beginning a series in math called “Countdown to STAAR”. Your students will likely call them their “Blackouts”. There are seven questions per sheet (that are a mixed review of TEKS / student expectations to have a total of 50 problems). BLACKOUTS will become a daily task after we get down the routine and mini-lessons of new topics. Overall, this is great for addressing all standards and we will be able to clearly see what standards he/she does well in (and also where there may be struggles).

I have one hour with each math class, so we are working to be able to take care of our “Blackouts” during our WIN time. Blackouts will be assigned Monday and due Friday (for the fact that we have Genius Hour in lieu of WIN time on Fridays).

If and when students bring them (Blackouts) home, it will be because they were not completed during WIN time. The review of all standards on a weekly basis does amazing things over the next ten weeks. I have prepared and talked to each group about truly buckling down over the next ten weeks so that we may see progress. They are already soaring...I can't wait to watch them fly!
