Principal Message
Dear Lane Families,
Next Tuesday teaching staff will meet for district professional development. Teachers spend time in groups focusing on academic mindset, content mastery, and equity as the basis for all deeper learning work. In the afternoon, the Lane staff will attend a presentation by Dr. Hollie. Dr. Sharroky Hollie is a national educator who provides professional development to thousands of educators in the area of cultural responsiveness.
It's the time of year where we are seeing an increase of students in the building after school. Please know that all students are expected to be out of the building by 3:15 unless they are participating in an after school activity or are supervised by an adult. If you normally pick your child up and are running late, they can wait in the lobby for you. We also have Action 300 available for students that need to be picked up later.

Penny Wars
This upcoming week (October 29-November 2), Lane Global is hosting a Penny War during ALL lunches. Our students were learning about Quality Education and chose to donate our funds to The United Way after the War is over.
We are asking for your support in promoting this as a whole school event for a good cause. The winning lunch group will earn extra recess during their base group on any one day that your team decides works best after the winner is announced.
Pennies add to your total and silver coins/dollars subtract from any other group’s total!
Food Drive
Lane will be holding its 2nd annual food drive from November 1st to November 16th. Food should be turned in to base group teachers each morning and student council will tally the totals every other day. The three base groups with the most food collected will have an opportunity to go to feeding America and help sort food on Friday November 30th.
For the next two weeks, we are asking students to bring in specific non-perishable food items that Feeding America is in the biggest need for. These items are:
Peanut Butter
Canned fruits and vegetables
Canned soup
Cereal
Canned meat, tuna, or cans of ravioli with meat
Rice
Pasta
Beans and legumes such as garbanzo beans, lentils, kidney beans, black beans, soybeans, pinto beans, navy beans
Please refrain from bringing in Ramen noodles, as we are trying to provide healthy options for Feeding America to distribute.
Signs of Suicide (SOS) Lesson
Dear Parent/Guardian Lane Student:
The preteen and teen years are marked by a roller-coaster of emotions. Stressors surrounding friends, school work, relationships, the future, and trauma are all around. It is easy to misread moodiness or feeling down as normal adolescent behavior, but depression appears to be occurring at a much earlier age with the past few years seeing an increase in teen suicide rates double.
To proactively address this issue, counselors will be delivering classroom lessons on the Signs of Suicide (SOS) to all our 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students during the month of November. Topics will include warning signs of depression and suicide, ACT (Acknowledge, Care, Tell) procedures, and community resources including mental health apps.
Parents and guardians are always welcome to view curriculum or call to discuss.

8th Grade Career Fair
Monday November 19, 2018
8:00 - 10:00 am
Lane is excited to announce we will be running our second annual Career Fair on Monday November 19 from 8:00 to 10:00 am. We will again be using an arena-style format in our auxiliary gym with 8th graders visiting tables and gathering information about various careers.
This is where we need your help. Last year, we had many Lane parents volunteer their time and share their careers with our students. We are looking for professionals in any field to participate in the Career Fair. Please contact one of us if you can volunteer or if you know of someone that we should contact. Thank you so much.
