Utopia Can Not Exist

"People should not be afraid of the government, governments should be afraid of their people"

When Evey and V were discussing the whole reasoning behind V's idea to blow up parliament, V said this quote to justify his action. In the dystopian society that Evey and V live in, their governemnt is so powerful that people fear it and follow its rules. In our country, people have a say in the government unlike in V for Vendetta. Because of this, our governemnt is more likely to be afraid of the people rather than its people afraid of their government.

Sonnet

We are trapped in doors all day

Held hostage in our room

I can hardly wait to get away

From all the rules and gloom

They make it seem like a crime

When I simply leave to get food

If it happens one more time

Officer Lockhart says I’m screwed

Why is it a big deal

To go get food for a bit

When all I did was buy a meal

Instead of eating the schools $#!%

I think most students would agree

That changing this rule would make us all happy

A Dystopian Reality

The United States is the world’s most financially successful country. It is a place where people are “free” and opportunities lurk almost everywhere. However, we have been brainwashed to believe all of this and in reality there are several striking similarities between our country and a dystopian-like society.

In a recently published article titled “5 ways the Hunger Games is More Realistic than you think”, the authors explain how this movie resembles our lives. “There are a lot of similarities between Panem and the world we live in today. In the U.S. the gap between the upper and lower classes is growing wider; we’re seeing conditions similar to those that have caused young adults to bring radical change to countries around the world, and to the conditions that threaten to start a revolution in the Hunger Games”, said Idee Winfield(Winfiled et al).

The top one percent of the wealthiest Americans hold about 35% of all the wealth and 80% of the people have about 11% of the wealth. This is also similar to 1984 because the Proles who make up 85% of the population live in slums similar to people in poverty.

In today’s society, we idolize celebrities in a similar way to the Hunger Games as a distraction to what is really happening to our country. We are not focusing on real issues such as debt, jobs and the sustainability of the Earth’s environment. “If you look around and see how pervasive reality TV is in our lives, how frequently we make celebrities out of nothing, you will notice that distraction is everywhere”, said Winfield(Winfiled et al).

The unlawful immigration of others to the USA to provide services for rich people is another dystopian like example. We have employed cheap labor from other countries to help wealthy US citizens with specific household labor tasks.

We are at a place in our history where citizens worry about the honesty and integrity of their government leaders. Have they been honest? Do they monitor our activities? Are they taxing us for the right reasons?

Genetic engineering examples were practiced by Hitler and describe a superior society of human beings. There are bioengineering examples today of the possibility of crossing different species to create an entirely new Frankenstein type individual or food that is the total opposite of the peaceful co-existence found in a Utopian world.

The world of democracy would indicate that legislators have term limits, which are determined by elections. The reality is that senators and house members can pay their way to be re -elected instead of earning their way by votes.

The reality is that a Utopian situation will never exist because by definition it is a perfect world and we know that the world can never be perfect. There will always be people who try to find ways to deceive the system and create opportunities for themselves and who do not care about others. We need to continue to develop processes which prevent bad things from happening (like Hitler) but that do not limit the creativity of mankind.

The American Reformation

Washington, D.C., DC, United States

Washington, DC

A large gathering outside of the White House will be held as a final attempt to change the government peacefully. We live in a demoocracy, however the past 5 years has been more like a totalitarian take-over. People are advised to show up prior to 10:00 AM as there will be a singing of the national anthem beginning at 10:05, followed by a speech asking for change in the direction that our government is heading.

"Brother Where You Bound" by Supertramp

The song “Brother Where you Bound” by Supertramp has several links to George Orwell’s 1984. For example, the irony of the name of the song is that it relates to the “Brotherhood” in 1984. The Brotherhood is the legend of an opposing party working to overthrow Oceania’s totalitarian government. Throughout the song, it references the day to day life in a dystopian society, especially similar to Oceania. At the beginning of the song the lyrics go:

And you don't know what they're gonna do,

And you don't know how they feel,

And you don't know what tellin' you

Is it a lie or is it real

Winston is constantly aware that a party member could be watching him. Although O’Brien gets the best of Winston in the end, Winston had suspicions all along that he was actually a member of the party. O’Brien pretended to be a link to the Brotherhood which gave Winston hope to trust him. This led to Winston’s eventual arrest. The next reference in the song lyrics go:

And the message they giving you

Is the same old alibi

If you don't quite see their point of view

Then they treat you like a spy

This relates to how Party members are constantly trying to capture those who are not in support of the Party. It also represents how to Party members were lying and changing the history to make it how they wanted it so the people would not know the truth.

Lyrics

There's a red cloud hanging over us
And it's so big and it's gonna burst
All you people with your heads in the ground
Hey brother, where you bound?

And no good and everywhere
Try to tell you, but you just don't care
yes i hear you but you don't make a sound
Hey brother, where you bound?
Hey brother, where you bound?

And you don't know what they're gonna do
And you don't know how they feel
And you don't know what tellin' you
Is it a lie or is it realAnd the message that giving you
Is the same old alibi
If you don't quite see their point of view
Then they treat you like a spy
And the next thing that you know is
That they walk out on the deal

And the phone rings and you disappear
In the middle of the night

Can't you see they're on the move
Don't know what you're trying to prove
But you sit there oh so cool
Like they never broke no rules

And the cat flies and the crow walks
And the ghost dies and the sow talks
And they tell us that they'll be as good as gold
B'lieve nothing that you're told
Hey brother, where's your soul?

Make a move in one direction
Try to make some compromise
But they greet you with rejection
Makin' out you're tellin' lies
Then they turn around and tell you
Better get down from the sky

For the sake of all that's holy
Listen good to what I say
I can feel them all around me
They could be here any day
But you act like you don't know me
Why d' you look at me that way

If there's one thing that is clear
We gotta get away from here
We've gotta leave this place
It's just a hopeless case
Ain't no one else to blame
We're gonna lose this game

Hey brother get off my back
I gotta tell you, you're way off the track
They got a hatred deep down inside
Ain't gonna let them take me alive
I'm gonna burn them down, just wait and see
Ain't gonna let them walk over me
you ain't got no heart and soul
And your mind is weak and your blood's runnin' cold

You better move, you better hide
They're gettin' in, they're gettin' inside
If you get caught you better know
They're gonna reap, you're gonna sow
Don't be a fool, we gotta go
Ain't no place safe for us to stay
We better move on, we better move on

How Apple Products make our Society a Dystopia

In our world today, technology has never been so prevalent. In the last decade especially, technological advances are at a constant rate. This is all due to the way Apple has marketed and changed the way consumers react to products. Every few months or so, Apple releases a new product. One hundred percent of the time, consumers react the same exact way. They feel like they have to have whatever the new thing is. People often judge others based on whether or not they have the newest Iphone. This is where the dystopian aspect of this comes in. The concept of Apple is worshipped by society and has become impossible to live without.
