News you can use from Dena'ina Elementary School
Principal Post
Dear Dena'ina Families,
Fall MAP and AIMSWeb benchmark testing is over and the results are in. You should have received your child's report, along with the Parent's Guide to MAP. Teachers use this data to determine how best to help your child succeed academically. In addition, teams look at the data for the grade level (previous years and current) and create goals for proficiency. Data from these tests and the state PEAKS exam help guide our Title I plan. Title I is a provision in the Elementary and Secondary Education Act that provides federal funds to schools with a higher percentage of students in need. Our Title I budget is spent primarily on hiring people to help with instruction, materials for classrooms, family engagement events and licenses for online programs.
If you'd like to view our Title I Plan, School/Home Compact, Family Engagement Policy or learn more about what we do at school, please visit the About Us section of our website or the Parent Information page under the Home Connection tab at the top of our website.
Parents are the most important factor in a child's success in life! How can you help them at home? Two things: (1) Focus on reading at home, practicing math facts and spelling words and (2) Attendance - be sure your child is at school every day unless they are sick, and if they do miss school talk to the teachers about making up the work they missed. Of course, ensuring they get plenty of rest, eat healthy meals and get enough exercise is also helpful. Another way to help your child(ren) is to take good care of yourself - we often sacrifice our own rest or health when life is busy!
I look forward to seeing you at Parent/Teacher conferences on October 31st and November 1st. Please read more about conferences below.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Everett

Frequently Asked Questions
REAL is our acronym that stands for Respect for all, Empathy for others, Accept Responsibility and Leadership. These 'tickets' are given out by adults when they notice students doing things that fit these traits. We believe you get more of what you pay attention to, so we strive to focus on the positive behaviors that students exhibit. Every adult, including bus drivers, can give REAL tickets. Students write their name on a ticket and each classroom teacher has a system for drawing tickets to reward students in different ways.
