Celebrating Black Authors
Bookmarks is a collection of 12 episodes featuring different Black celebrities reading children's books from black authors. These celebrities include Tiffany Haddish, Common, and Lupita N'yong'o. Each video is created to show the Black experience and spark conversations about self-awareness, respect, justice, and action.
To supplement the series, Librarians from the Black Caucus of the American Library Association have complied a list of fun activities for young readers, and members of the Association of Library Service to Children have shared links to resources about how families can connect with children's library professionals to assist in their children's learning and development. The materials are available on the Bookmarks website.
You can view the series of episodes on Netflix Bookmarks or watch them for free on the Netflix Jr YouTube page.

SEL Book
This month's Social Emotional Learning book is Sulwe. It is written by Lupita N'yong'o and illustrated by Vashti Williams.
Sulwe tells the story of a little girl who "was born the color of midnight" and is treated differently than her lighter-skinned friends and family members because of it. The tale takes a magical turn when a star comes in her bedroom and takes her on a mythical journey ending in her own self-love and appreciation of the brightness and beauty of her complexion.
