National School Bus Safety Week

Did you know that our bus drivers drove 228,000 miles in 2017-18? And that our mechanics have regularly received top inspections from the Washington State Patrol?

Join us in recognizing the achievements of our drivers and transportation staff during National School Bus Safety Week October 22-26, 2018. Schools across the district will recognize the hard work that our bus drivers, mechanics and transportation staff do to keep our students safe every day.

Here are some tips to share with your students:

· Be an early bird. Be at the bus stop at least 5 minutes before the bus is scheduled to arrive.

· Maintain a safe distance. Stand at least 6 feet away from the curb when the bus approaches, and keep the line away from the street.

· Get the all clear from the bus driver. Wait until the bus stops, the door opens, and the driver says it's okay to step onto the bus.

· Remain visible at all times. If you have to cross the street in front of the bus, walk at least 10 feet ahead of it before you cross. Be sure the bus driver can see you and you can see the bus driver.

· Use the handrails to avoid falling. But be careful to make sure clothing and backpacks don't get caught in the handrails or doors when exiting the bus.

· Never walk behind the bus. Again, always make sure that you're in the driver's line of sight.

· If you drop something near the bus, tell the bus driver. Never try to pick it up, because the driver may not be able to see you.

For more safety tips, check out the National Association for Pupil Transportation.

Questions? Contact Transportation Supervisor Karen Garrison at kgarrison@asd103.org or 360-503-1151.

Equity Film Festival: Becoming Bulletproof

Please join the Anacortes School District and community partners for a very special *free* monthly film series this school year featuring current documentaries and great conversations exploring topics of equity and inclusion. Race, gender, disability, displaced families and other complex issues will be our themes as we share in the immersive experience of film and engage in discussion after each documentary. Bring a group of friends and join the conversation!

This month's film: Becoming Bulletproof - October 25, 7:00 p.m. at the AHS Library

Building community, transcending stereotypes, and celebrating each person's joyful gifts is at the heart of Becoming Bulletproof, a fascinating "story within a story" about a film company that casts young adult actors with and without disabilities. You will laugh, weep, and be transformed by the emotional truth of this film. Bulletproof is unrated but is most suited for older teens and adults, due to mild language and frank discussion of some issues. Our discussion partners include Kiwanis Aktion Club and Class ACT. See the trailer here!
