The OWL Newsletter
Otto Petersen Elementary School
Dear Families,
We are about eight weeks away from the end of the school year, and we want to be sure to finish strong! This is an exciting time of year where our students are preparing to be introduced to the next grade level, participating in fly-up days and forecasting for classes.
Planning for the upcoming 2022-2023 school year has started, with open enrollment around the corner! In mid-May, I will be sending home a learning survey to all families for you to provide information about your child's learning needs and characteristics. Although we may have an idea of what these could be for your child, it is so important to include your thoughts and perspectives as the parents/guardians of each child so that as a team, we can create the best learning environment for your child!
The district waiver for nutrition services and free meals will expire at the end of this school year. What this means is that meal charges will resume next year for school breakfasts and lunches. Free and Reduced Lunch applications are available and will be accessible if you believe that your family might qualify for this program.
Summer enrichment opportunities, Kinder Camp, and ESY information will be coming out soon for you to consider as you are planning what the summer will look like. Please watch for more information coming in May!
For 6th Grade Families, Outdoor School is next week! Your child's teacher has been sending information home about what this year's ODS will look like and what day trip experiences your child will be participating in!
Thank you for your continued support—we appreciate your collaboration.
Respectfully,
Jenneca Crocker

May is Mental Health Awareness Month: We will talk about positive coping skills we can use when experiencing difficult times. Using books is a great way to learn. Here is a list of books that address mental health and other common challenges, like dealing with painful experiences and coping with strong emotions.
- The Invisible String, Written by Patrice Karst, the concept of an invisible link between people, even when separated.
- A Terrible Thing That Happened Written by Margaret M. Holmes, the book explains the symptoms of post traumatic stress disorder in simple terms that young children can understand.
- Lucy's Blue Day, Written by Christopher Duke and Federica Barolini: Lucy is a special little girl with magical hair. It changes colour with her emotions. If she is feeling happy, it is purple. If she is jealous, it will turn green. This charming story is the tale of when Lucy wakes up, and her hair is blue, and she doesn't understand why. She soon learns that it is #OKNotToBeOK.
Discussion questions to ask your child:
- What new information did you learn?
- What information did you already know?
- What in the book can you relate to? Why?
