Dear Families,

What a spectacular week of weather we have had for our Spring Break!! I hope you were able to get outside, enjoy the beauty of spring around us, and disconnect from school for the week. As we come back together on Monday, we are in our final nine weeks of school. This year has certainly been one for the record books. I am so excited to bring our students back to the classroom or online for a great stretch of teaching and learning.

I wanted to share an important update I learned about during break. For those students in 3rd through 5th grade, there will be NO SPRING SBA (state and federal testing...Smarter Balanced Assessment) testing. I fully support our focus on teaching and learning and not formally assessing our students during this time. We are still working on supporting the mental health of all learners and this testing would have pulled away from this work. While the testing does not go away completely, the testing window has been moved to Fall 2021. More information will be shared as I receive it.

Continuing with the testing theme, we do have two tests that do being this coming week. First, if your student is in 1st grade or you have registered your 2nd or 3rd-grade student for Highly Capable considerations, the screening begins this coming week. We will universally screen our 1st graders and then if a set threshold is met, they will move onto the assessment portion. This is a similar process for 2nd and 3rd-grade students. Students who registered, will participate in the screener and then move on to assessment, should they meet the initial threshold. Communication has been sent to families directly from the Accelerated Models and Programs office.

The second testing that will begin this week is our COVID testing for students in 2nd grade and above. I sent an email on Thursday of this week with information regarding the testing and how you can Opt-In and Opt-out of testing. We would like for EVERY FAMILY who has a child participating in hybrid learning to respond with either an Opt-In or an Opt-out. The links are below for you. As of right now, we have only received responses from 67/141 students who will be participating in hybrid learning. Please use the links below to indicate your Opt-In for testing or your Opt-Out for testing.

COVID batch testing

Dear Cottage Lake Families,

On Friday, April 9 you received communication from the Northshore School District regarding COVID testing occurring for all students beginning the week of April 19. This testing is for students in grades 2 and above. Before we begin the batch testing, we need your consent to do so. I am asking you to go to this site to provide your consent for your child to take a COVID test. When you sign up, you will be asked to submit a unique code for our school. Cottage Lake’s code is: “ns-cottagelake”.

This code you are receiving is unique to Cottage Lake and will allow us to know which students and staff are participating in this important method of keeping COVID cases low and school buildings open. Last Friday, four of our elementary schools piloted the batch testing program and everything went smoothly.

Please read through the District’s letter you received for details. (I have also included the email below in case you can’t find the original communication.)

A few key points to emphasize:

  • Students in Grades 2-12 can test

  • Testing will begin the week of April 19.

  • There is no COVID testing for 100% remote students.

  • A student’s “batch” is their classroom cohort; (eg. Ms. Welch’s class-Group A or Ms. Welch’s class-Group B)

  • Each classroom cohort will be tested every week.

  • If there is a positive test detected, all members of that group will be notified. The district will provide an opportunity for all members of the class to participate in a confirmatory test, free of charge.


  • Your child will only be tested if you Opt-IN and give your consent at this link.

  • Cottage Lake’s unique code is: ns-cottagelake

  • To Opt-OUT your child from the batch testing, click on this link

  • If a student or staff member is opted out of testing, but their classroom cohort has a positive COVID test result, they will still be required to quarantine for 14 days

Seasonal Allergies vs. COVID – How to keep your child in school!

As you can see by the CDC graphic below, seasonal allergies and COVID have many of the same symptoms! To keep our student population and staff safe, we send students home who have any one of the symptoms below in the darkened area of the circles.

If your child has known seasonal allergies and you want to avoid having them sent home, you can send in a letter from their healthcare provider documenting their diagnosis along with their expected symptoms.

Yearbook Photo's Needed!

Calling all photographers! We need yearbook photos!

Visit our PTA website to upload photos of your kids for the 2020-2021 school year. Did you capture their first day of school or the ice cream parade? Favorite Mask? Playing in the snow? Paint and PJs? Halloween? Kids working in your home "classroom"? Art Docent? Favorite pictures of the school year? We'd love to see them all! Please make sure if photos include other kids that you have permission from their parents to submit them for the yearbook.

Name the photos with your child's grade and subject area and visit for upload instructions.

Photos are needed by APRIL 20th!

Class photos: If your child attended picture day we'll get them from Dorian. If you have portraits you'd like to use instead, upload them to the folder with their teacher's name under ClassPhotos.

•• Specific Reopening Information ••

Students should not be on campus before 9:15 AM!

Arrival at school

PLEASE DON'T FORGET ALL PARENTS MUST COMPLETE THE STUDENT HEALTH CHECK FORM EACH DAY THEIR STUDENT IS ON-SITE FOR LEARNING. We would like this completed by 9:00 AM each day. This cannot be completed the day prior to a student attending. The system resets at midnight each day.

  • When students arrive on campus, they will be directed to our two Student Health Check stations. If your student is arriving by car or walking through the front of the campus, your student will go to the health check station by the cafeteria.
  • If your student is arriving by bus or walking through the side gates off the playground, your student will go to the health check station between the library and the main office.

Please remind your students to keep an increased distance from each other.

Water Bottle usage

For the rest of the school year, our drinking fountains have been covered and are closed for usage. We do have a couple of water stations in the C-Building for students where they can access a cup of water.

For students to always have water at their fingertips, we are highly encouraging students to have water bottles with them. Please make sure they are clearly labeled with their name, as well. If we could offer any suggestions, we would encourage students to have water bottles with straws, so they can drink their water without taking off their mask. Students could pull out the bottom of their masks to drink and then the mask is back over their face after.

Kindergarten registration is OPEN!!

Kindergarten registration for the 2021-2022 school year is now OPEN! To enter Kindergarten in September, students should be 5 no later than August 31. All registrations will be completed online, including providing immunizations and uploading other documents as needed.

NEW Book Circulation

We are ready to roll with our new Book Request and circulation plan. Mrs. Sterling has worked so hard for this!

Please use the form below for hybrid students AND fully remote students. There is information at the top of the form for pick-up dates. Hybrid students will gather their books on either Tuesday or Friday while they are at school. Fully Remote student's pick-up will now be held on WEDNESDAYS, between 12:15-1:00 PM.

Waivers for the 2021-2022 school year will soon be accepted. This is earlier than before, as we look to have a better understanding of our student numbers for the next school year. Please see below for the dates we will begin accepting waivers.

Meals during remote learning and hybrid learning

With school moving to launch hybrid learning, our Food and Nutrition department is continuing to ensure our students and families have food available. Families will still be able to order weekly meals online, with a pick-up date on Wednesdays.

Third Quarter Progress Reports

Friday, April 9 marked the end of our third quarter of school. With the pivot to Hybrid learning and Fully Remote learning, we feel our staff have been in close contact with families and new teachers to share the performance levels of our students. To that end, we will not be sending home formal progress reports for the third quarter.

If your student is supported through Special Education services, you will still receive your goal update summaries in the mail. Those will be mailed this week to families.

Glee Club/Choir Grades 3-5

Dear Families,

Mrs. Hanning and Ms. Hoffman will be offering a glee club/choir to those students who are interested in grades 3, 4, and 5. The Cottage Lake Glee Club/Choir will begin Friday, April 23rd. It will be held weekly and virtually from 11:00 to 11:30 AM, and will continue until June 4th.

Being in a choir is a wonderful opportunity for students to expand their musicianship. It teaches them many music skills and techniques such as: singing in harmony, reading solfege (Do, Re, Mi, etc.), and proper breath control while singing. It also teaches them self-confidence and teamwork. These are important skills to know, as they help to develop skills in other academics areas.
