WIDA Formative Language Assessment Workshop: April 24-25, 2017
DCSD is excited to host the WIDA Formative Language Assessment training on April 24-25th. This two-day workshop examines formative assessment practices designed to focus students' and teachers' attention on English language development within the context of general classroom instruction. By analyzing observable learning interactions, participants will develop (a) a deeper understanding of factors that shape academic language development and (b) strategies to foster students’ engagement with language learning in disciplinary practices. The FLA workshop is designed for general classroom teachers and English language specialists who share instructional responsibility for language learners. Ideally, these teachers and specialists are already engaged in collaborative practices which integrate language and content learning in their classrooms. Expertise in using the WIDA Standards Framework is needed for this workshop.
Learning Goals:
- Describe students and their learning with a focus on growth that capitalizes on their assets.
- Recognize effective formative assessment practices that advance content learning and language development.
- Leverage learner roles within disciplinary practices to create opportunities for purposeful language use.
- Develop learning goals and success criteria that support learning and language development.
- Design learning which elicits purposeful language use related to success criteria within learning goals.
- Engage in on-going formative feedback that advances learning and language development.
Participation in this workshop requires a teaching partnership. The partnership should include the ESL specialist and a classroom or other certified specialist who is not an ESL teacher. The ESL specialist may not attend this workshop alone. Space is limited to 35 participants per WIDA requirements, and partnerships will be approved on a first come-first served basis. Participation will include post workshop conversations and possible opportunities to facilitate and support professional development in DCSD. This may entail capturing video of your learning and implementation in action.
The ELD Department will provide substitute coverage for those who need it. In general, most elementary and some secondary ESL specialists do not require a sub. Once your partnership is approved, you will receive more information, including location, times, and workshop materials.
Space is limited, so register soon! To register for approval to participate, please complete this form. If the link fails, you may copy and paste this into your browser:
