Message from Dr. Paul Gothold regarding Equity, School Safety, and School Culture Resources
The last several weeks have been marked by national issues — such as the verdicts in the cases against Kyle Rittenhouse and the men who murdered Ahmaud Arbery and the school shooting in Oxford, Michigan — that have raised local concerns and awareness about topics such as equity, school safety, and school culture.
Our students want and need to talk about what they see, remember, and are feeling now; they need the guidance and safety of adults in their schools to be able to navigate their own emotions and trauma in a healthy, safe, and productive way. That is why I want to direct you to several resources created by the San Diego County Office of Education.
Guidance for Parents, Educators Following a Shooting offers information from mental health experts on effective ways for school staff members and parents to talk with students following traumatic events. It also includes links to training and support related to school safety, school climate and culture, and student mental health and well-being.
Our students have powerful voices that can effect change, and it is our duty as parents and educators to support our students as they grapple with these topics. This is an opportunity for us to provide guidance on how students can be civically engaged and aware through an educational lens.
The past two years have reminded us all of the power of strong relationships, and the importance of classrooms as safe places to help children process current events. Thank you for the extraordinary commitment to this work on behalf of our students.
Sincerely,
Paul Gothold
San Diego County Superintendent of Schools
