Week 4 Term 3 SFDS Newsletter

St Francis de Sales - Wednesday 17 August 2022

MARY-ANGELA'S MESSAGE

TĒNĀ KOUTOU SFDS FAMILIES

As you know, we have a fantastic staff team here at St Francis de Sales School. This is evidenced in many ways. Two ways we monitor success are through achievement data and attendance rates.

ACHIEVEMENT DATA:

Our Leadership team presented a report to the Board of Trustees this week, detailing the progress of our learners through the first half of the year - including all learners, and digging a little deeper in relation to a group of 30+ learners across the school termed ‘target learners’. Here is the full report presented to the Board, for your interest also.

ATTENDANCE:

Attendance is one measure of how our children and their families are committed to learner and continuing engagement with school - even when we face the ongoing challenges of Covid-19. You may have heard in the media that schools are challenged by ongoing school attendance.

Each Term, I receive a report from the Ministry of Education, detailing various data related to attendance, and I thought I would share one graph below from the latest report, as it clearly illustrates that the local and national trends of low attendance are not evident at SFDS.

I would like to thank our staff, who have a huge impact on the engagement of learners at SFDS. Thank you also to all families for your ongoing support and engagement - this is great for our tamariki.

ENROLLING FOR 2023:

This year we have had a great deal of interest from local families in enrolling their child at our school. This is great news for our school, as it helps us to plan ahead. If you have not yet enrolled your preschool child, please do this as soon as possible. We need this information to let us know how many teachers we need on our staff, and to ensure we continue to provide a rich learning environment. Please contact Fran or Suzanne in the office to arrange enrolment. Thank you

2023 SCHOOL TERM DATES

Below are the school term dates for 2023. Please ensure that you book family holidays outside of these dates, so that your child/ren can attend school regularly throughout the school terms. Thank you

Term 2: Monday 24 April - Friday 30 June (Anzac Day Tuesday 25 April, Queen’s Birthday Monday 5 June)

AOTEAROA NZ HISTORIES

This year, we have all been upskilling and supporting the children to learn about and appreciate Aotearoa’s History. Catholic Education has a rich history in Island Bay.

1905…

On 26 April 1905 the Society of the Sacred Heart opened Saint Francis de Sales School in Avon Street to support catholic families in the bay.

Big picture

1926…

With a growing number of catholic families in island Bay, a new school was opened at 167 The Parade, called St Madeleine Sophie School. Many of our current grandparents attended that school. We have loads of photos from that time.

Big picture

1967…

In the photo below you may recognise a few of our grandparents! Our very own librarian - Hennie Bosch is also in the photo - looking as happy as she always does today! See if you can spot her.

SARAH'S MESSAGE

SOUTHERN ZONE SWIMMING SPORTS

Well done to the 39 swimmers we had at this event yesterday. It was a great morning at the pool and our swimmers represented us very well.

The top three in each event and the first placed relay team will participate at the Inter Zone Cross Country which is being held on Thursday 22 September back at Kilbirnie Pool. Those who will be participating will receive more information closer to the time.

TENNIS

The annual Wellington and Kapi Mana Primary and Intermediate Tennis Tournament

This information has already been emailed to you but here is a reminder about this an optional tournament.

The girls' tournament is on Tuesday 20 September (back up date Friday 23 September), starting at 8.30am.

The boys' tournament is on Wednesday 21 September (back up date Thursday 22 September), starting at 8.30am.

Both tournaments are being held at the Renouf Tennis Centre, 60 Brooklyn Road, Brooklyn.

There is an open grade for year 7/8 students and a year 6 and under grade for all other year groups. The draw will be posted at the venue on the morning of the tournament.

Players entered must have played tennis before and have knowledge of the rules of tennis and how to score. Players must also bring their own tennis racquet for the event and wear our school PE uniform.

Finalists and semi finalists of each grade will qualify for the Tennis Central Regional Finals to be held in Palmerston North on 16 November.

The school won't be sending any staff to these tournaments. This means you will need to transport your child to and from the venue (or you could share transport with others) and also help supervise the SFDS players during the day - we probably only need one adult there at a time. Please do not enter your child in the tournament if you are unable to help. I will send a list of those attending once I have the confirmed list so you can organise to share transport if you'd like.

If you would like me to register your child, please let me know via return email on sarah.fountain@sfds.school.nz by Friday 2 September at 3pm. Suzanne will then add the $20 entry fee to your Kindo account. Payment will be required by Tuesday 6 September at 3pm. If we don't receive payment in time, then I won't be able to enter your child.

If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to get in touch.

DRS MESSAGE

A PRAYER FOR RAINY DAYS LIKE TODAY

When I hear the pitter-patter, drip, drop, splash

or watch the trickling streams on my windowpane,

when new flowers grow or cool breezes blow,

I thank you, God, for your precious gift of rain.

Amen

NATIONAL SYNOD SYNTHESIS

Parishes and dioceses around the country took part in the local phase of Pope Francis's synodal path to the Church’s future, which will culminate in an Assembly of the Synod of Bishops in Rome in October next year. The NZ bishops have just published the National Synod synthesis document that emerged from the diocesan phase of the process and the national hui held in Wellington in June. The national document has been sent to Rome as one of the many such documents from around the Catholic world as part of the Synod process.

A copy of the National Synod document is attached. The document, a summary of its contents, and an outline of the Synod process are online here: https://www.catholic.org.nz/news/media-releases/nz-synod-synthesis/

SCHOOL NOTICES

HEAD INJURY NOTIFICATION

Our procedure around any head injuries is to notify parents so that the student can be monitored for delayed concussion once home after school.

In the case of a minor head injury such as a small bump- knock- ball to the head we will send you a text message. Anything deemed more serious we will call you.

If you receive a text and are concerned, please feel free to call us back for further details. We would not text you to come pick up your child. This will always be a phone call.

LUNCH ORDERS

Here at St Francis de Sales, we offer three lunch options each week that can be ordered online Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. Place your orders via the Kindo Shop on the school website www.sfds.school.nz or www.mykindo.co.nz by 9am for Subway and Sushi and by 8.30am for Pita Pit on the day.

Named orders will be dropped off by 12.30pm on the day and can be collected from the school office. Please ensure you receive a confirmation of your order – it can be quite upsetting if a child thinks they are getting a lunch and it doesn’t arrive.

CANCELLING LUNCH ORDERS

If you have pre ordered lunch for your child and the situation has changed (eg Swimming, Sick, Sports day, School trip etc.) and your child is not going to be there on the day, you are able to go in through your kindo account and cancel the order as long as you get in before the daily cutoff. This will refund the money back to your kindo account.

CAR PARKING AND ROAD SAFETY AROUND THE SCHOOL

Please remember the road rules below when picking up and dropping of your children to school and always park legally. Thank you. For the safety of everyone, drivers are requested to carefully follow road rules when driving in the streets near school. This includes:

  • no U turns,
  • no backing round corners or turning in and out of driveways,
  • no double parking
  • no stopping or parking on yellow lines.

Obeying the road patrollers when they are on duty, children get in and out of the car on the foot path side of the car. We ask that no cars enter the school driveway – the driveway does not have room for dropping off, turning or parking.

Please remind your children that they should always use pedestrian crossings and parents and children must follow the instructions of road patrollers when they are on duty at a crossing. As well as our two crossings on Mersey and Clyde St we have been asked to remind families that use the crossing patrolled by Island Bay School to also follow the directions of their road patrollers.
