What's coming up next week:
Next week in reading, your child will revisit many previous learned skills. Students are continuing to learn how to read and listen to a short informational passage and answer questions about key details from the text. Students are learning how to use evidence from the story to support their answers as well.
In writing, we will continue teaching and learning about "How to" writing . Students are learning how to use time order words such as first, next, then, and last to help them explain the steps in which to complete a task. At this time, I am looking for clear ideas and organization, spacing between words, grade appropriate language and spelling, and grade appropriate use of conventions.
Many students are rushing to write their names and simple words. You can help with this at home by reinforcing legible handwriting with your student. Students need to be able to write words using correct letter formation and place them on the lines correctly. This is a skill that is necessary for first grade learning!
In math, we will continue to learn about non-standard measurement! Students will continue learning about length, height, weight, and capacity. Students will begin by using concrete materials and move into more abstract thinking. This study also incorporates previous learned skills from our unit about characteristics of science. You can help at home by talking to your child about words such as taller and shorter and showing them items from home that have weight and capacity. Parents can use statements such as, "An elephant has more weight than a mouse" and "A mouse weighs less than an elephant."
In social studies we will be learning how to distinguish between living and non-living things based on physical attributes. Students will also be explaining the characteristics of living things.
